Looks like they have caught up with CHL processing.
Me and two of my friends submitted the applications at the same time and got all approved the same day...

    Official day of submission: 10/28/08
USPS Certify Delivery: Your item was delivered at 9:35 AM on November 3, 2008 in AUSTIN, TX 78761.
TXDPS: Check Deposit by TXDPS 11/06/08
TXDPS: Received PIN from TXDPS 11/29/08 - Status: Processing ApplicationTXDPS: Application Completed - license issued or certificate active 01/29/08

Counting from the day the cash the check to the day I got the status updated It seems just a bit over two months.

I have to say that DPS is working hard to get all those applications process and caught up. Kudos and big Thank you to every person that works at DPS for the effort they have put to get caught up.

I experienced about the same result. I was expecting more like 4 months for an approval here in Harris county, but just received my plastic in the mail yesterday. Pin was received back around Nov 12.

Wow, have you called or emailed to check on it? That sounds way to long considering newer ones are already processed.

Was there any errors or corrections that were needed?

When you hit 90 days and it still hasn't appeared in your mailbox, give DPS a call:

    Phone: (512) 424-7293 or (512) 424-7294
    Helpline: (800) 224-5744

Some things that will slow your application/background check:

    • Born or lived outside of the U.S.
    • Born or lived outside of Texas
    • Multiple arrests and/or substance abuse/psychiatric treatments to investigate
    • Your name is similar to someone with an extensive criminal record
    • You omitted information or listed inaccurate information on your application
Give them a call. Be polite. Unlike most government we deal with, the folks in the CHL department are overworked, understaffed and still maintain a reasonable level of professionalism.

I agree. I was really surprised when I emailed to check on mine and got a near instant reply that was very thorough and courteous.

That was before the crunch last year, but still, a State agency? Who'da thunk it?

Just received my Utah Non-Resident Conceal Carry License. Why?.... you may ask. The Utah Non Resident License is good in Texas, has a 5 year validity, and cost much less. The best part about it is that, when my Texas CHL comes up for renewal next year, I can take my time getting it renewed and not worry about a laps. If my TXCHL laps for any period of time, my Utah Non-Resident will be acceptable until the TXCHL comes in..... NO Down time.

Even better is that the Utah Non-Resident license is valid in Navada where the TXCHL is not.

Utah is good, but there are a few states that TX has reciprocity with that won't honor the UT non-resident license. So having both is good. I'm going ot get my UT license when I'm like 3 years from renewal of my TX license for the same over-lap reason.

The reason that some new apps were being done while older apps were still being processed is that they implemented some new process procedure, and the apps that were started prior to this procedure had to stay in the "old method" pipe.

I was born in Texas but live in California. There is no will issue of CCW license law here. The big movement right now is open carry. My attitude has always been to walk softly and carry a big stick so open carry is not for me. Open carry in California means you can carry the weapon on your hip, unloaded with the ammo close by. You cannot be within 1000 feet of a school. If you get in your car and do not lock the ammo in the trunk, your breaking another law. The laws are restrictive and one slip up, you lose your right to own guns for ever. "If I die, I may not go to heaven, Texas is a close as I've been".

I never thought about getting a CHL from another state as well, good info, thanks.

Things change... and that means that you can't rely on what works today, working tomorrow. My hopes are that, if Utah does take away the Non-Res license, that they simply come up with a better way of doing it. For right now, it works.

If you live in the Austin/North Austin area, you can take the Utah Non-Res license class for about $50-60 and then the license is about $65 more. The class is only 4 hours long and only takes an evening to get through (no range time).

Mine says on the website Processing Application. I walked it in on February 9th, 2009. Anyone know how long they waited for the Processing Application status went before they got theirs?

Utah Non-Resident Conceal Carry License Update: If you have, or are getting, a Utah NRCCL, then you probably have heard about the recall on many of those licenses. Before you get too worked up, let me explain more about that recall.

Utah allows the individual instructor to take the picture and fingerprints of the students for submission to the FBI. Some of these instructors have been doing a poor job of doing this procedure. Because of this, many of those applications have been rejected or recalled… and some instructors have had their teaching license revoked.

If you have taken your class in Texas, it is very likely that your instructor does not do the fingerprinting and photos (although some do). Most instructors in the Austin area relay on a company called F.A.S.T. that will do a digital version that checks the validity of the fingerprint before submitting it. If you have used a digital fingerprinting company like F.A.S.T. then it is very unlikely the FBI will be contacting you (unless you have some skeletons in your closet).
