Might want to rethink the shotgun shells in the Judge. The patterns are horrible and worse, the penetration is too low to reliably stop a fight. Load it with bird shot in case you get a snake in the house, that's honestly about all the Judge is good for.
Well I know at 35 feet with the PDX1's I can cover up where the 3 discs hit with the palm of my hand. And in the design of my house I'm not really worried about spread because its pretty close quarters. But most of the time it's my XD.

Agreed but if, for whatever reason, the BG is in or or in the process of actively entering your room undetected, it's to late to chamber a round. That's all I'm saying.

That's why my Sig is loaded with a chambered round. If I don't have time to jack a round of 00 buck into the shotgun, I've still got 16 rounds of .40 cal to fire at the bad guy....hopefully not that I'd need that many......

Although a friend of mine suggests you keep firing until they change shape or catch fire.........

My rule of thumb for home security is TRUST THE DOG! Jake never barks unless something is wrong and I trust his judgement. When he barks, I'm armed.

^^^ same here. My dog is pretty lazy but she's got a good ear. She won't bark so much as growl, but even still it's usually enough for me to at least sit up and pay attention, if not clear the house and peek out the windows.

Penetration is still going to fall way short. Judges loaded with .410 shells show bad results in testing and in real life.

One night I was jolted awake by my dog making some strange growling noises she normally never makes. Pistol in hand I peek out of the bedroom to investigate. I can see over the banister that she it looking up at the top of the stairs and growling. I shine the light in that direction and see nothing. "What the hell does she see that I don't" I'm wondering. I maneuver around to where I can see the top of the stairs to find my mom's cat at the top of the stairs starting back at my dog. I should have shot the cat

Sometimes the "intruder" is something that will never be seen by you in a massive adrenaline rush looking for a human intruder.

Just last night at about 4-something AM. I was sitting in the living room surfing the net, when I thought I heard something at the back door.
As I listened more intently, I realized that someone was tapping against the door itself!

With my hand on my HK, and a flashlight in my left, I approached the door just in time to see something nearly below where I was focusing my field of vision.
It was a f***ing cricket! He had gotten in the house, and was jumping against the door over and over again. <facepalm!>
I made sure no person was actually outside, and then opened the door and let him hop on out.

Yeah - Just like TheDan "should have shot the cat", I should have shot that damn cricket!

I've definitely been in the situation where it was something easily identified but that particular night because of the way my dog was acting I got thrown into that combat mindset.

Glock 19 with 9mm Federal Hydra Shok ammo on the nightstand. I used to keep my 870P around for HD for the idea that racking a shotgun is a universally recognizable and respectable sound that sends a BG running but I've changed my line of thinking that I'm not giving the BG a chance to leave my home alive. I hate criminals.

Dogs are great, they do their job!

I am curious about one thing though, all you guys that have multiple guns within reach in the bedroom, what do you do with them when you leave to go to work?

I would just hate for somebody to come home & have one of their own SD weapons shoved into their face, that's what I
    was getting at.

Well, I leave mine right where they are. If I come home and see any signs of forced entry, then thats why I have my CCW. If they want to break into my house, set off the alarm, and then sit in the house with my firearm while that obnoxiously loud siren is going off with my dog chewing on their leg, while the ADT folks are calling me, and the local PD is responding... then by all means they can stay. When I get there my CCW will be used with tactical precision as I am entering and clearing my own house.

I sure am not going to lock them away when I leave.
