Annoyed @ the range...

Well...took a friend to the range to do a little shooting. He said he was interested in getting a new handgun and wanted to test out a Glock 19 vs. Springfield XD9 and I happen to own both. So...we go to shoot and I ask him if he has ever been to the range and if he had shot a handgun. He tells me he has a 40 Glock and that he is familiar with handguns...so I said ok. I asked him again to confirm that he knew what he was doing and then I left him in the lane to shoot. He asked where I was going and said I was going to load some mags for my rifle. When I go to the range though...I load the mags before I leave the house...mainly to save time while there. Anyways...I stood a few feet behind him just to make sure he knew what he was doing and NOPE. He yells back...hey I think the safety is on this Glock. I'm like great...why did I go to the range with this guy...so I tell him to put the gun down and that I will explain to him how to operate the gun and basically give him some safety instruction.

What irritates me is that he told me he had a "40 Glock" which would only have a trigger safety just like the Glock 19. WTF? He should have just told me he never handled a handgun before...I asked him where his gun was, and he tells me that its somewhere in his boxes...who just leaves a gun in some boxes? Needless to say...last time taking this guy to the range.

Try having your wife tag along on your "alone" time. She shot my G17 while I was continuously loading her mag without getting to shoot my Kimber SIS. SHe went through 200rd before I got through 20. Not to mention the constant warnings over the speakers for her rapid firing.

I'm sure it's trying, but at least you taught him proper protocol rather than him going to "find out on his own". We see plenty of people that have no idea what they are doing at the range. I try to help as many as I can, but it can get tiresome.

I agree...its better to provide him with the knowledge but he should have been honest with me that he had zero experience. I always make sure to watch someone that is new when they are around me. I would hate to have anything go wrong that I could have prevented.

No offense to your friend but I generally find people that have "Glock 40s" are not up to speed.

How many "men" are going to admit they have no idea how to operate a handgun? That would be embarassing. Never assume anyone knows the first thing about firearms until you have demonstrated they have a clue.

I "test' such people by handing them a (previously cleared) gun with the action closed and observe their actions. Trigger finger placement, muzzle control, ability to check if it is unloaded. If they fail anyone of these basic "tests' they get "square one" instruction. If after 5-10 minutes they have a glazed over expression, we are done. You will not be shooting with me or handling my weapons, ever.

To be safe, presume all people are complete firearms idiots until they prove otherwise.

Used to the somewhat the same but this is the first newbie I have been with to the range in a long time...I usually stick to only going with people I'm comfortable with. Mistake on my part...Gotta get back on that routine you just stated! Good info sir!

I always make a run though of safety and function with shooters I have any question about their abilities.

What sucks is that this guy lied if he had not lied then it would not have been such a big deal.

Newbs at ranges scare me when they care about their ego more than the safety of themselves and those around them. Wayne, glad to stayed back to ensure this guy was ok to go and ran through the procedures.

If the guy wanted to save face he shouldn't have lied. If he really wanted to be coy yet ask for help he should have said he hadn't shot a Glock in a while so he could use a refresher on the buttons/levers.

i was at the shooters club yesterday, and some guy had a misfire, so the first thing he did was put the butt of the gun on the rest/stand, and looked down the barrel,(he was in the next lane and i was reloading just looking at his macho one handed terminator style sideways stance) then proceeded to hit the butt of the gun on the rest... i grabbed his hands and placed his hands and gun flat on the rest, and pointed the gun downrange, and removed his hands no sooner did i do that and the round discharged and the gun went spinning onto the floor.

i dragged him by his shoulder out to the showroom and chewed his a@& a new one, not only did he endanger his life, he endangered my and everyone elses in there, their staff told him to pack up and leave, and strongly recommended he not frequent there again.

This is how my brother's best friend died many years ago, except he was at home trying to "fix" a gun that had a round "lodged" in the chamber. Unfortunately he took the round right in front of his wife.
