This is a very good letter to the editor. This woman made
some good points. For some reason, people have difficulty
structuring their arguments when arguing against supporting
the currently proposed immigration revisions. This lady made
the argument pretty simple. NOT printed in the Orange County
Paper................... Newspapers simply won't publish letters to the
editor which they either deem politically incorrect (read below)
or which does not agree with the philosophy they're pushing on
the public. This woman wrote a great letter to the editor that
should have been published; but, with your help it will get
    published via cyberspace!

    New Immigrants !
    From: 'Name Witheld'

My wife, Rosemary, wrote a wonderful letter to the editor of the
OC Register which, of c! ourse, was not printed. So, I decided to
'print' it myself by sending it out on the Internet. Pass it along if
    you feel so inclined.

Written in response to a series of letters to the edit or in the Orange
    County Register:

    Dear Editor:

So many letter writers have based their arguments on how this land
is made up of immigrants. Ernie Lujan for one, suggests we should
tear down the Statue of Liberty because the people now in question
aren't being treated the same as those who passed through Ellis
Island and other ports of entry.

Maybe we should turn to our history books and point out to people
like Mr. Lujan why today's American is not willing to accept this new
kind of immigrant any longer. Back in 1900 when there was a rush
from! all areas of Europe to come to the United States, people had
! to get o ff a ship and stand in a long line in New York and be
documented. S ome would even get down on their hands and knees
and kiss the ground. They made a pledge to uphold the laws and
support their new country in good and bad times. They made learning
English a primary rule in their new American households and some
even changed their names to blend in with their new home.

They had waved good bye to their birth place to give their children a
new life and did everything in their power to help their children
    assimilate into one culture.

Nothing was handed to them. No free lunches, no welfare, no labor
laws to protect them. All they had were the skills and craftsmanship
they had brought with them to trade for a future of prosperity. Most
of their children came of age when World War II broke out. My father
fought along side men whose parents had come straight over from
Germany, Italy,France and Japan .. None of these 1st generation
Americans ever gave any thought about what country their parents
had come from. They were Americans fighting Hitler, Mussolini and
the Emperor of Japan. They were defending the United States of
America as one people. When we liberated France, no one in those
villages were looking for the French-American or the German
American or the Irish American. The people of France saw only
Americans. And we carried one flag that represented one country.
Not one of those immigrant sons would have th ought about picking
up another country's flag and waving it to represent who they were. It
would have been a disgrace to their parents who had sacrificed so
much to be here. These immigrants truly knew what it meant to be
an American. They stirred the melting pot into one red , white and
    blue bowl.

And here we are in 200 8 with a new kind of immigrant who wants
the same rights and privileges... Only they want to achieve it by playing
with a different set of rules, one that includes the entitlement card and
a guarantee of being faithful to their mother country. I'm sorry, that's
not what being an American is all about. I believe that the immigrants
who landed on Ellis Island in the early 1900's deserve better than that
for all the toil, hard work and sacrifice in raising future generations
to create a land that has become a beacon for those legally searching
for a better life . I think they would be appalled that they are being used
as an example by those waving foreign country flags.

And for that suggestion about taking down the Statue of Liberty, it
happens to mean a lot to the citizens who are voting on the
immigration bill. I wouldn't start talking about dismantling the
United States just yet. (signed) ********* ******

KEEP THIS LETTER MOVING. FOR THE WRONG THINGS TO PREVAIL THE
RIGHTFUL MAJORITY NEEDS TO REMAIN COMPLACENT AND QUIET!! LET THIS
NEVER HAPPEN!! I hope this letter gets read by millions of people all across
    the nation!!

That's a bit loaded. There are plenty of immigrants that have come to this country recently, both legal and illegal, that want nothing more than to become Americans, and blend into society.

Go to Boston, and see the Irish influence and Irish pride in the city. That's no different than immigrants in Texas having Mexican pride is it not? What about the Italians? The Vietnamese?

What is going on now is no different than what happened at Ellis Island back then. The Irish were seen as lower people because they were escaping tyranny and blight in their own country. The majority were incredibly poor and Americans at the time did not like it. They came in droves and were enlisted into the Northern armies during the Civil War as soon as they came off the boats.

Put yourself in the shoes of the immigrant. Would you leave your family, cross a border illegally into a completely foreign country, and live a life of being hidden away wondering if INS is going to find you every single day? Why would they do that? It's because they only want better for their family.

Alot of these people would do some good to actually talk to some immigrants.

You're absolutely right, although I'll ignore the "illegal" part of the statement because that's a whole other issue. However, that's not the point of "the letter" and I don't see that it paints with a broad stroke, rather it addresses a specific segment, one that I would call the majority of immigrants who are illegal and how "they" are different from the immigrants who are all our forefathers.

Talk about loaded. Regardless of what an a person wants, there is a right and wrong way to do it, and illegal is "illegal" and there are no implied rights.

It would do a lot of people to talk to immigrants; I agree. However, in the context that I read, talking to illegal immigrants is what would support your argument. If you talk to legal immigrants, they would blow your argument right out of the water and be the first to be in line to load up and deport the illegals wanting to freeload.

We focus on illegal immigratioin because it IS a major problem in this country and the bleeding hearts want to pamper them and treat them as if they have rights, yet there is still a large population of legal immigrants doing it right, and are the biggest opponents of the illegals looking for the free ride.

It paints a minority within the immigrant population. Of the 200+ immigrants from all over the globe I've known not one fit the perspective that the letter pins them in.

This is simply another one of those ignorant rhetoric rants guised as an excuse for white immigration over brown immigration.

You want to know the true message behind that editorial? The true message is that in the 1850's through the 1930's there was an open process for immigration into this country that processed immigrants in a matter of hours. Talk to any legal immigrant about the process we have today. It costs tens of thousands of dollars in lawyers, years of paperwork, and more bureaucratic bullshit than you can shake a stick at, and thats just if you are lucky enough to speak Spanish. Yes, I said it... Mexicans get a free ride compared to other immigrants such as from England, Poland, Canada, Romania, and others. I have the stories for many threads to tell you how poorly ran this country is in regards to immigration.

Fix the system, and illegal immigration will virtually disappear.

Illegal is illegal, but if you don't fix the system then you are no better than those wanting to grant amnesty. That is what enrages me about this country, you have two bickering ends of people that don't want to fix anything, they just want to stick their heads in the sand.

I'm not saying our immigration process isn't flawed, but that too, has nothing to do with illegal immigration.

I need $20 but the ATM is screwed up. That doesn't give me the right to steal the $20.

I need to go back when I'm not as beat tired and read it to make sure I'm "reading it". A quick scan and I think maybe I did what I assume others do/did/will do and that's see something regarding immigration and ran with it to make their point without reading to see what point was really valid. I think we all are quick to jump on the immigration discussion because it's such an issue.

Some take it way out and twist it up into something that it's not. For me, it's just that, illegal immigration. Nothing more, nothing less. Not color vs. color. I don't want a Mexican wading through the Rio Grande sneaking into our country any more than I want an Irishman wading across the Rio Grande sneaking into our country.

On a side note, the massive problem of illegals coming across our southern border from Mexico is not limited to Mexicans. It's a walk in the park for people from countries all over the world. The smart ones even walk across with forms in hand, submit and walk away never to be seen again. That's an Immigration system problem though.

I'm outy on this discussion though. It's a hot topic but 99% of the time, it's very easy to see quickly when it's never going to go further than a battle of brick vs. brick vs. brick. :D

BTW, I also think that if there was not an economic benefit (fat cats filling their pockets at taxpayers expense) to have illegal immigrants here, the borders would be closed in both directions, not just the outbound lanes. As long as someone is reaping the benefit, they'll be allowed to be here and take advantage of freebie's like education and health care with tax payers picking up the tab.

I agree, my point is to stop bitching, and fix the system. However that would be asking too much of our worthless government.

    I agree completely.

Well, that article was spot on for the part of Texas I'm living in. There is a difference between the illegal immigrants of today and the generation of immigrants when my great-grandparents came to America.

When my great-grandparents came here. They went through a legal port of entry and were documented. Their first priority was to blend into American society. They told their children to stop speaking German and to speak only English. What their children learned in school, they taught my great-grandparents at night. For the most part, that is not done today. My great-parents were AMERICANS. They weren't Mexican-Americans or German-Americans or Japanese-Americans. Many of the illegals from Mexico consider themselves Mexican citizens. I know, because I work with a lot of them. Many are here to earn better wages and send money back to Mexico.
