Interesting story here (to me at least...). I went to one of my favorite gun stores in Corpus Christi, which happens to also be a pawn shop (might give the location away, but whatever). I had a nice talk with someone working there, who told me they used to have AK's there for $350-400 a piece before BHO was elected. Now he says he's fighting with his distributors over the price they want to charge him for AK's. They want $975 a piece for low end ones (probably Century Romy's), and he refuses to pay that much and as a result has not ordered any AK's. All he has is one Saiga AK (non-pistol gripped) in .223. At least this guy has the nerve to stand up to the distributors and refuse pass on the huge price increase onto his customers.

Also, they also had a Century CETME Sporter in .308 on the wall. I took a look, as there were no real AK's to look at. Ok, now I understand why they say that Century has a group of trained monkeys making rifles:mad:. It had the worst looking furniture, receiver, and op handle I have ever seen. The plastic/polymer furniture was old/worn/badly molded, and was whiteish gray...who would pick that color...seriously. The receiver was a piece of spot-welded crap, which was very sloppily machined/stamped (can't tell which). The op handle looked like it had been used in some forgotten war, had no finish, and was starting to turn (not quite rusty). However, it did feel really good on the shoulder and felt a natural pointer to me. I don't blame the store owner for having one to sell...he's just trying to diversify as much as he can in these stock-trying times. But I have to say, that I will never again consider buying anything made by Century Arms again. They may be a decent importer, but they have no pride or concern for the quality of their products:mad:.

As long as their are people willing to pay the prices will not go down. Most of the shops in my city have no more AKs.The site of a an AR is common but the price is so high that only the rich can afford one.Century has always been a hit or miss.I have bought AKs with the cant so bad you could not hit the side of a barn with thirty rounds.

Were the plumber's pipe wrench marks still visible on the "precision assembled parts"? They were on the Century Golani I had the misfortune to own.

By the way, I used to live in Portland Texas; 1982-1983. I worked at Taft Hospital, now closed up.

Ok, I fixed my post...should have read "gun store that also happens to be a pawn shop"...how did I miss that? Must be tired. Anyway, no I did not see any pipe wrench marks on the CETME, but it was so sloppily put together, it was no way worth the asking price. But did it feel great on the shoulder...I need to find a non-Century one now...

Glad to hear Taft may actually be recovering. I wonder what happened to all the physicians I knew when I worked at Taft Hospital.

Some years back I saw a 19th century Smith & Wesson presentation grade braketop revolver, engraved and in a padded box in an antique auction. It had been given to some late 1800's Police Chief of Gregory Texas after many years of service according to the engraving. Wish I could have afforded to buy it.
