A standing militia is an armed local defense force of civilians. Basically the "Minutemen" of any given region. This has always been the definition of a militia in the New World. Before the militia would be called up by a regional lord and armed to act as an impromptu army, but a standing force is always armed.

In Europe there was no need for a standing militia because most countries had fielded conscript professional armies. Earlier in the medieval times this was less common as the concept of professional armies was not really taken to the modern level until the 1500s with the advent of widespread gun powder armies and imperialism.

THAT is the difference between CITIZENS, and SUBJECTS

unfortunately- that lesson apparently needs to be retaught from time to time

Today we need a nation of minutemen, CITIZENS who are not only prepared to take arms, but CITIZENS who regard the preservation of freedom as the basic purpose of their daily life and who are willing to consciously work and SACRIFICE for that freedom. JFK

i guess what i was wondering with a (standing) malitia should the malitia get together and make a formal plan to deffend because at the present time it looks to me like if the goverment tried to disarm americans they could just walk thru and do it but if there was a group of people that had a plan of meeting and relying on each other with some numbers there odds would be better .... willypete

I think something like this would be best done under wraps. Not only that, but it would probably be infiltrated by local police under the guise of conspiracy. I would probably involve a lawyer in this if you decide to do something.

Personally I don't think it's a good idea. It would only further alienate gun owners on the political arena. It would more or less serve to self-fulfill it's own prophecy.

Promote Gun Clubs, Range Days, Self Defense Classes, etc.. Wouldn't really need a militia, so to speak, when citizens are familiar and comfortable with defending themselves. When the SHTF, like on 9/11, Americans will naturally join together.

That's my theory, and I'm sticking to it. :)

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

When did it become against the law to put your rights to work ? When did being a patriot become something that should be done in secret ? Or has it allways been that way ? I really dont know so if any one has the answer i would be thankful . It really bothers me to thank we have let the goverment get this far out of service to the people ....." WE THE PEOPLE " i guess is no more ......... willypete

"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to security of a free State" I believe this means that a state has the right to regulate a militia independent of Federal government and firearms laws.

"the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed." Would mean that individuals would have the right to bear arms to protect themselves and personal property.

"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to security of a free State" I believe this means that a state has the right to regulate a militia independent of Federal government and firearms laws.

"Regulated" has changed over the years. Back then, to be regulated meant nothing more than to be held to a standard. To a degree, it still does, but it means being held to a strict government standard.

In the context of the 2A, "well regulated" means well-equipped and drilled. They didn't want a bunch of individuals stumbling out of their homes without a decent weapon, enough ammunition or a basic knowledge of the tactics they'll need to use. A well regulated militia would have proper arms, proper gear, enough ammo on hand, and at least a basic tactical knowledge.

"A competent and well-armed militia, being necessary to the security of a free State..." means the same thing.
