This will probably be one of the most off topic posts you'll see in a while.

I was wanting to know a local (Houston area, preferably east side) place to buy textured vegetable protein.

WHAT THE HECK IS THAT STUFF?

Textured vegetable protein is made from soybeans, and is the prime ingredient in vegetarian products like "veggie chili" and "meatless burgers".
It is cheaper than meat, more healthy than meat and stores a lot longer than meat. It is not a total replacement for meat, as you still need some amino acids and such that are only found in real animal flesh.

Most of the products in which it is used have some meat product in them, and TVP to make up the rest of the weight.

Myself, I'm not a vegan or any of those other type of folks who 'don't eat meat' for some reason. I am just a cheap bas**** and don't mind cooking with soybean products.

    So.

    Any idears?

Are you aware of the estrogen levels in soybeans? It's a potential health issue that I'd be at least aware of before you go ordering a ton of it.

Other than that, I am unaware of where you can buy it in bulk. School boards may know, as it's involved in alot of the school lunches.

    Yes, thanks.

I've been eating tofu for years, I'm just tired of it and wanted to try another type of soybean product.

Could probably call Huntsville, too, but I think I'll pass just the same.

"Vegetarian" is an old Indian word for Bad Hunter. If you cant shoot it. it aint worth eating. If God didnt want us to eat animals he wouldnt have made them out of meat.

Weird. Before I read this post, I knew what "TVP" was. Mom used to use it as filler in meatloaf, chili, and spaghetti sauce.

And act as a filler it did.

Probably available in bulk from Whole Foods, HEB Central Market, or any other place that tends to cater to the more, er, health-conscious/yuppie crowd...
