The last opportunity I had to buy real black powder, over the counter, was at a shooting range south of Lubbock. The stuff is nearly impossible to get without mail ordering, filling out forms and paying "hazardous contents" charges.

Anybody know if it is still available there?

Unless things have changed since last month, I'm still able to get Goex at my lgs in college station.

Edit: sorry, didn't notice the location specifics of the question.

    How adventuresome are you?

If you want to make your own, it's not that hard and the ingredients are easy to find. I've found good recipes over at The High Road in their black-powder section on how to make it at home.

I understand you wanting the real stuff. While it's messy, the cloud it produces and the effect is pretty cool.

It's true...you can make it yourself. I used to buy the Potassium Nitrate at Walgreens and make it into a cake. Grinding it into powder to get a fine grain is the dangerous part as BP will ignite from concussion or impact. The chief sources of Potassium Nitrate are bat shxt deposits from caves and Civil War battles were fought over control of Bat potty caves.

BP is classified as an explosive where PB substitutes and smokeless powders are not. BP must be handled in many odd ways even by sellers so they shy away from it.

    I have some Goex.....wanna trade?

You must have made yours dry. Try using a wet recipe like this one for better quality and it's safer.

Don't worry if you don't have a ball mill, a rock polisher or a case tumbler works just fine.

I pass through College Station from time to time. If a local gun store sells fffG Goex I would go for it and save on hazmat fee plus shipping.

Cities and even counties in Texas have made it hard to impossible to stock true black powder for retail sale. Even Lubbock, to my understanding, passed a local ordinance which limited sale to dealers outside city limits. The range I mentioned sold retail fffG Goex but I had to pay his hazmat fee plus sales tax.

Anyway do you have a dealer in College Station in mind? Thanks, Jim

Burdett & Son, located on Texas ave. Their number is (979) 695-2807. I just had their card out giving some info to one of my coworkers. Great folks. If they don't have something on hand they're happy to order it for you.

I think what I have gotten from them in the past is fffG in 1 lb cans.
