Wouldn't it be nice if there was a custom-made cargo shorts w/ a built-in holster? or something to that effect? I would love to carry my 1911 gov't. model around in summertime, but all my shorts are too wimpy to hold it up. Is there a company that makes something to that effect?

Company's like 5.11 tactical make some thing like that I think. If they do it wont be cheep, but you might want to try looking into 5.11. I'll see what I can find, but till then good luck.

Why doesn't a good purpose made belt and good holster not work?

Just because I run around in flip flops, shorts and t-shirts in summer doesn't mean I'm not carrying either of my Kimber's comfortably.

Yep Denim pants $49.99 two concealed carry pockets hidden in the waist. And I don't have time to check the shorts right now but I'm sure they have some of the same features, and most of the shorts are in the $40-$50 price range.

Good point I know a guy that carries a full size Glock around, wearing shorts and flip flops all the time.

The material of the shorts will influence the effectiveness and comfort of your belt and holster. The stiffer the denim/material the more form support is offered.

When I wear my Wranglers, my gear stays in place and stays more comfortable for longer. When I wear my khaki shorts, not as much comfort and support to my gear.

Try looking for a seamstress or tailor in your area.
The can modify, add pockets, etc.. very economically and you can have a tailor fit.

Any concealed carry method has pros & cons. "Pocket carry" comes with it's own particular pros & cons, so it's important to research the particulars of carry modes and test them to see how they work.

I doubt you can get the level of retention and security in a hidden pocket that you can with a good belt and holster.

Don't forget the ever important accessibility.

I mean, if we are going to be effective with with our tools, getting them into action is probably the most important factor.

That dose have a lot to with it but haveing a built in pocket that is made for holding a gun might be a good thing as well.

    Wow! so many responses...

What I'm ultimately trying to do is find a way to carry my 1911 in summertime, but being someone of some girth, it's difficult to find a way to tote it around.

Their pants are made for carrying a small handgun, not a full-sized 1911. Even the smallest subcompact 1911 is going to be cumbersome in any pants pocket. I don't see how any type of built-in pants pocket is going to be worth a darn for carrying anything bigger than the smallest subcompact or pocket pistol like the Ruger LCP or Kel-tec. I know there are guys that carry Glock and Kahr subcompacts in their pants pockets, but ask them to draw it quickly for you. :p

A 1911 is one of the easiest to carry because of how thin they are.

What kinds of holsters have you tried to use, if any?

Great advice. It's for many of these reasons, I am seriously considering appendix carry. While it seems much tougher to find just the right, comfortable setup it has a lot going for it. I really need to get rid of this gut though before I can ever hope to do so comfortably. ;) lol

I was talking about guys that carry full size guns while wearing shorts not in the pockets of their shorts. And the pockets are inside the waist band and completely separate from the hip pockets. But we both agree that some one drawing from pocket can't draw fast at all (in general), and you're right the 5.11 pockets are made for smaller subcompact guns.
