I am from the other Bush state, Florida.

    So why register here????

When all this economy crap quiets down I was considering a move in the area NW of Austin because of higher ground, dry but not too dry climate, south of the tornadoes, north of the Hurricanes and as far as I can get from DC and Kaliforinia.

So, I figured finding out a few things in advance would not be a bad idea.

My intention is too find cheap land say 20-25 acres way out away from people who do not like to hear the sound of 8MM Mausers , 223 and 308.

However, I am sure there is a difference in even small Texas towns and areas where pre-informed might be a benefit.

Get to Texas as fast as you can..

We welcome those great folks that want to come and embrace our way of life. You may have to look a bit far Northwest Of Austin to find affordable property with neighbors not worried about shooting but it is wonderful country.

I am ignorant of every single thing I do not know.

I cure ignorance with questions and hopefully get some advice on where to look when the time comes.

welcome to the forum. now I am a it farther north than you are talking about, but I still love it here in Texas. but then I was born here, lived here all of my life, and plan on being here when I die(not to soon, I hope).
I live in a small town outside of Abilene named Hawley and yea we do love the sound of the big guns going off. I have four Mosin Nagants myself. and they do go boom. so come on over to the big country.:p

You'll have to pick something pretty far NW of Austin. Austin is growing incredibly fast.

The further West you go the less humidity. In Austin, it's pretty bad during the Spring / Summer.

You can still find nice large chunks of hill country up around Llano that would be a great place to call home... For pretty decent prices. Even between Lampasas and Burnet or back around Bertram there are still good areas that haven't skyrocketed in price yet.

Anything much closer in is likely to be progressively more expensive. It really depends on just what your budget is.

I left fla in 73 when I joined the army.I stayed away for 25 years and finally went back to see some friends.they ruined it .where I used to fish for reds they pumped up the sand and built condo's.where I hunted for quail and dove ditto endless shopping malls and armpit to armpit people with blue hair.
I have been here in tx since 81 except for several deployments across the pond:).it was love at first sight.some of the finest people I have ever met anywhere.
    god bless texas.

Not if he doesn't want humidity though...its pretty bad here! Course, I traded 0% humidity (Dalhart) for 110%, so I could be a little biased.

Is there such a thing as inexpensive land in Texas anymore? I guess if you head west far enough. I have seen some West Texas sand pits that were going pretty cheap. As long as you don't want the mineral rights!:p You may have to drive 80 miles to the nearest gas station/store though.

Last year, my wife and I purchased a small place (8 acres) in Luling Texas. It's SE of Austin. We looked at land all around Austin and San Antonio but we didn't care for the rocky ground of the Hill Country we kept running into. And the prices were pretty high. We have Black Buck and White tail on the property, and a 10 acre pond next to us.

We had originally wanted to getabout 20 acres and spend about 10 grand an acre... we just never did find that right ground-size-price-area combination we wanted. When we found this 8 acres, it met our needs better than anything else so we bought it.

There are some websites you can look at... just google Texas Acreage Austin or texas Acreage Hill Country... you'll find lots of great looking places. Here is what we settled on.
