Purchased a new Savage 12 BTVS 223 and mounted a 5-20x44 Nikon Monarch using a Denutz one piece mount, bore sighting went fine however at range I was 10 inches low and 7 inch left @50 yards. Problem the Nikon Monarch has only approx. 32 total moa, ran out of travel below aim point.

Returned scope to factory and mount both companies supplied new hardware mounted and same problem. OK at this point I assume mounting points on rifle receiver are off screw holes bored wrong or back of receiver slightly low. Purchased a Leupold universal mount with windage adjustment and Burris signature rings with Zee inserts, using the 0 rings and bored sighted plus using a laser it appeared to be dead on at 25, 50 and 100 yards.

First round out of barrel at 50 yards 10 inches low, 7 inches left, each click on this scope is only 1/8 at 100yards so I would guess at 50 it would be 1/16. Next I will try the .005 zee ring insert, honestly never had this type of problem sighting in a rifle, any advice short of selling it would be appreciated.

What is the rate of twist of the barrel and what kind of bullet are you using?

How tall are your rings? Does the front objective barely have any room over the barrel or is it open?

1/8 MOA is rough. Generally best used for benchrest or very long range shooting.

Are you centering the scope adjustment when you boresight the scope? You'll have to go to one extreme and count back.

I have never seen a rifle max out the windage in a Leupold mount, there is a ton of adjustment there. If your receiver holes are drilled off enough to be that far left at 50yds with base windage maxed-out, you should be able to see if the holes are out of alignment fairly easily.

    Are you near Austin?

Rifle has a 1/9 twist I'm using 64 grain bullets to sight in planned on using 52 grain match after sighting in or which gave best accuracy.

Rings are the medium height scope objective is .155 above barrel "some gap" agree the 1/8 adjustment is wrong for my use that was a mistake
but old eyes prefer a 6x18 or above for target shooting.

I did not center the scope adjustment however i will do that never found it necessary in the past but with this scope may be required.

I'm not sure what you mean. What are you referring to as the "scope adjustment?" You twist/grains look fine. This is factory loaded and grouping decently right, just out of your scope adjustment?

    1) Center the reticle in the scope on the horizontal windage axis before installing.
    2) Mount the scope.
    3) Boresight the scope, adjusting windage as close as you can using only the base/rear ring adjustment. Loosen a little , tighten a little to do this.
    4) Apply force from both sides the rear ring at the same time to tighten down once you are on your bore sight reference point.
    5) Blow holes in paper at 25yds.
    6) Post what happens.

Yeah used wrong term I never turned scope to stops and centered crosshairs up/down and L/R. may be worth a try.

I used a tool called level/level to insure crosshair sets correct in rings.

Normally in past when using bore sighting or laser I'm within 5-6 inches at
100 yards, I've found this to be very unusually to be off this distance.

I'm not sure what you mean.

When you have a narrow range on the scope, or plan to do alot of long range shooting you will want to zero the adjustment so you maximize your windage and elevation. A common error in scope installation is when you install it with the scope already moved from zero, thus leaving you with less adjustment to work with.

Generally it's not a problem if it's mounted correctly to use the adjustment knobs to boresight it, but in this case it will be.

Yeah I know, that's why I recommended he zero the windage on the scope before installing it and boresight with the base windage adjustment. Elevation doesn't matter in this application.

I was trying to clarify what he meant by "scope adjustment." As in internal or external on the base. It's all cleared up already.

Wanted to update,I did center crosshairs(that was a good tip)I installed a.005 zee insert in back Burris ring made minor adjustments in bore sighting, went to shoot this morning fired 3 rounds at 50 yards,1/4 inch group 7 inches low and 4 inches left, now I was able to adjust up and right to bring me on target however up was out of range at that point.

So I will order the .010 insert and believe that will solve problem I like the Burris rings they grip well and no marks.

Dumb question here but it's been a long time since owning a adjustable base, how to adjust, if bullet impact is left.

I believe this rifle has a receiver machining problem back base about .010 lower then front would not be a big problem with a normal scope however the adjustment is so fine on the Nikon, the glass is exceptionally clear.

I wanted to update this thread perhaps help others, I finally corrected problem using Burris inserts,20 back, 10 front, plus a Leupold single piece adjustable base for windage, now have it dialed in with enough adjustment in all directions shooting 1/4 to 3/4 inch groups with reloads.

I can only assume they is an minor error in machining of receiver
and or holes for bases, either way the accuracy makes up for the problems.

Actually I started out with a one piece Dednutz mount and rings had same problem, I believe the problem is in the receiver, slight difference in front to back add to that the possibility of mount holes out of alignment.

I've been told by Burris and on other boards fairly common on new rifles, I never had it happen but then have not purchase a new rifle in years.
