I'll never understand what compels an individual (gun dealers in this case) to just be Jerks for no reason. Have you ever called to get pricing or maybe stepped into a Gun Store and from the get go they come at you with a crappy tone or attitude as if wasting their time or as if it pains them to discuss a weapon. When I enquire about gun in person at a store im there to buy. I dont ask for the history of every gun in the glass case. Im courteous and polite. Some people are just severely unhappy with their lives or something else. Wish they wouldnt take it out on the customers. I bought my first gun willing paying over price just cause i finally met a dealer that was ready to take care of a serious buyer in terms of questionnaire, guidance, courtesy, etc. What is most confusing is that you would think a dealer would be motivated to be friendly in the interest in selling....but beyond comprehension that is not the case(not all).

I will now be forced to do the same when it comes to buying my first handgun. I found it nearby for 30 bucks more. I will gladly pay the extra and deal with a positive dealer then some stuck up, old grump.

I haven't really had an issue where I live. I've been to several different gun shops in the Boise and surrounding areas and never have ran into a problem.

Generally it's because 10 hours into a 13 hour shift you really don't care to argue with someone about how .45 Auto will leave two smoking shoes if you so much as wing someone with it, and how 9mm is lethargic, but their .38 Special has killed 10 men in Vietnam when they were a Scout Sniper from a moving truck at a range of 1500 yards in a monsoon / tsunami / typhoon. Or how Billy Bob took that raging bull Elephant at 7200 yards with a .22-250. Or how AR's are unreliable, but AKs are the best ever, and how their friend's uncle's brother was an Airborne Ranger that went to Delta Selection and got in, and he uses nothing but a sawed off AK47 and a toothpick, and how they are going to get training from said operator even though they are a 300+ lb. LARPer that spends every dime they earn on more Blackhawk tactical gear, in black of course, because they only are seen at night... never in the woods.

It's nothing on you... but dealing with the morons that walk into a gun store, or call a gun store, will wear down anyone. Especially when you have a gun range attached, and said morons waive guns in your face on a daily basis.

Not bad for $9 / hr.!

That also doesn't necessarily apply to people that are just assholes... those people don't need the excuse.

so what Im hearing is that 10 hrs into a 13 hr shift Im going to be punished for idiots that came into the store prior to me. When I say grumpy dealers I mean people who shove me off before i even finish saying hello. Im not attacking ALL gun dealers. Im more confused then upset with them. Confused as to why they would not be motivated to make a sell.

I'm more or less giving an honest excuse why sometimes the service is sub-par. Some people just don't know what service is, and those people are generally just idiots or assholes. I'm not excusing the latter two.

If someone gives you bad service then just be about your way to someone that will give you better. Eventually time will fix alot of those problems.

Either walk away, make a complaint, go somewhere else, or go on-line.
There are a lot of options one has today for making purchases. Some ways are better than others. Businesses that have store-fronts also have on-line ordering in their business.
As we all know, there is a wealth of information out here in the cyber world. As long as the information is sound.
I feel what’s going to set businesses from others and in the future of dealing with customers….service.

I agree what Texas1911 has to say as well. Post #3. The thing is the challenge the person behind the counter has for customers like that.

It's hit or miss out there. I've been to same store and had two totally different shopping experiences. So far as they gun store employees I've dealt with. If I were their personal friend, I'd tell them "If you are going to deal directly with the public, know what you are getting into or get into another line of work".

+1....I've had a really good experience from Carter's Country in Pasadena & S.W. Freeway, then when I return on another occasion experienced the exact opposite. If I'm ready to buy, I'll just go somewhere else, at that point in time. I'm not going to stay away from that store (especially if they are having a really good sale on something I want) because somebody pissed on the salesman's cereal that morning. You never know he may treat you like royalty the next time around.

It's called retail sales. It's a pretty thankless job to those who really don't have the right "retail" mindset or aren't tolerant of the moronic retail public.

I imagine it gets old when many customers are not there to buy but to ask questions, finger the firearm, then leave and shop for the best price online.

Or you can do what my neighbor did at a local{ overpriced but iconic } gun store. After getting the crappiest service ever{ he has long hair and a long goatee} he asked to speak to whomever was in charge. When that person showed, my neighbor pulled a roll of hundreds out of his pocket, stated that he would have LOVED to spend here , but was going to go elsewhere. Even left them one of his buisness cards{ he owns a lawn service} and offered to educate them on how customer service should be.

I've run across a few knuckle-heads but, at least in the shops I frequent, it's not common. The worst is probably Cheaper Than Dirt. There are two or three guys in there that are helpful, but then there are a couple of real card-carrying asshats. Of course they are a very high volume store (although I buy little there due to the recent pricing idiocy) and there are a lot of mall ninja types that wander around and aggravate ever one.

I look at it just like any other business. If they don't care for my business, they won't get it.

Sorry man. You seemed way interested and I felt obligated to keep you entertained with my stories. BTW it was a rhino at 7300 yards with a .222. Where the hell you got 22-250 from i have no idea. I dont even own one of those worthless guns.

I've ran across 3 types of guys that work in gun stores-

    1. The know-it-all guys
    2. The asshole can't-be-bothered-with-it guys
    3. The very helpful, nice guys, who actually understand how to treat customers

Sometimes it's a mixture between 1 and 2. (probably attributed to being either naturally assholish, or just sick and tired of customers acting stupid questions/saying stupid things. but, it's a sales/customer service job- so they should be better at handling that.)

I've encountered 3 in only a few gun stores. It's awesome when you find one though.

I frequent Reds North and like the place all in all. They (certain ones) tend to be more helpful when my girlfriend is with me and she starts asking questions. I sometimes find it irritating when I get better service because of her but oh well, typical men i suppose.
My best experience with a gun salesman was a guy that works at Mcbrides names Lee. The guy sat and talked to me and my buddy about 1911's and various concealment tips, tactics, and the best bullets. He did all this for about an hour and never tried pushing a gun on us or got tired of our dumb questions. Now that is a good salesman in my eyes.
