I have found myself smack dab in the middle of a moral dilemma. While doing a tour of Baylor last weekend with my daughter, I found a thumb drive. I picked it up and put it in my pocket with the intensions of just keeping it and using it. Since then I had thoughts of whoever lost it needing info from it, so I decided today to try and figure out whose it is, and then mail it to Baylor for them to find the kid.

So when I opened it up, I find no address or other personal info for contact. I did find several papers and support for the papers. And also a number of pictures of the guy.... with his boyfriend. Now anyone who knows about Baylor knows that gaying out is against Baylor policy. I know several former students who were gay, but its against policy.

Therein lies my dilemma. If I send it to Baylor, they will see the pics of the kids gaying out, and one or both will be kicked out, no dount about it. So as much as this kid needs this drive, I think its in his best interest that I don't send it.

    What to do.........

Ask another student if they have a better way of finding out, perhaps a lgbt group or student government member, without naming names

Just send it to the lost and found. Not very likely they'll go through the problem of searching it to find out who it belongs to. It will just get thrown into a bin to wait for someone to claim it.

You can always just delete the compromising content and leave a notepad note saying "you're welcome".

Crop out the two dudes that are together. Assuming they arent kissing that is. And try to save each guy as its own pic. That way whichevers it will be will still be seen.

Good job on trying to do the right thing. I applaud that.

Younggun wants you to send the pics to his inbox...

Just put a pic of the owner (if you know which one it is) on a bulletin board (email or actual) and indicate you found the drive. That way you're not "outing" anybody and if someone sees it on line or on a physical bulletin board and recognizes the guy, they maybe able to let them know.

Your first mistake was picking up the thumb drive. You don't know where that thing has been!

You got that right. I found a camera while hiking in the Monahans Sand Dunes a couple of years ago. All I can say is that the phrase "what has been seen cannot be unseen" is correct.

This seems like the easiest way of going about it.

Without being a huge asshole and all.

Hate to be paranoid but I've spent too many years in computer security to let this one pass. Found drives must be opened in a secure manner. I have always used a stripped down box that's simple to re-image and not connected to the network.

"Found drives" have been scattered in parking lots in the hopes they'll be picked up and used inside the building. It's an established attack vector, both in private industry and government operations.

If I were in the OPs place, I'd know how to open the thing, extract useful information, then conduct a search for the owner and get that information back to them. The hardware and pictures would be lost to the owner. And that's if I wanted to go to that much trouble.

If I didn't want to go to that much trouble, I'd do what I suggest to the OP. To wit: reasonably assume that all the data on the drive is backed up on the main computer belonging to the student. Securely wipe the drive and keep it for yourself. If you don't know how to do a secure wipe, destroy it.

I agree with benenglish. However I look at it in a simple way, usb drives are cheap and a found drive is an infected drive.

For real, there is a current thread about a woman stashing a small pistol in her lady parts. Knowing that the owner is gay, you better hope he didn't lose the thumb drive during a good fart.
