44 special loads???

workin up an defensive load, will this load work??? 240gr jhp/.430, 5.0gr hp-38 for my 44 special? 4"ss full lug rossi m720. i figure this would put it at 780 or so fps. under cup limits. kinda slow for jacketed rounds bit is only a 4" bbrl.

If you are wanting defensive 44 special ammo at low speed, I advise the classic Keith style semi wad cutter. Big flat nose, 250grs of momentum, with good penetration.

Another classic, designed for these low velocities, is the Keith style semi wadcutter hollow point. Cast the bullet out of 1/30, 1/25 or 1/20 tin to lead alloy. This soft alloy will expand, moderate penetration.

Take care and reload safely.

The load you listed will work.
Velocity is fair.
Will not over penetrate.
Bullet expansion will be fair to good.
Just remember that with a 240gr bullet at around 800fps +/- is like a slow moving freight train hitting ya!
It will mess up your day!!!!
Barrel length is not an issue with HP-38 because it burns so fast.
If the bullet has a canalure I would use a heavy roll crimp and get a little better ignition and slightly higher psi and more velocity (820 fps). It will burn most if not all the powder before the bullet exits the barrel with the heavy crimp.
That Rossi is a lot stronger than people give it credit for.
I've had mine loaded pretty darn hot (low 44 mag rounds) and she still just humming along.
