Well, after hassling over lost paper work I have been accepted for this year's course. I know there are others here who are instructors and I was wondering if any of you could tell me what to expect.

I'm really looking forward to it and to teaching the course. I have seen some really poor instruction here in Corpus Christi, and as a former educator I think and hope I can do better.

Any advise you guys or gals can give would be greatly appreciated.

They will basically teach ya'll the course. You will also hear from the people in charge of the CHL processing division as to how paperwork should be done, etc. They will go over in detail the government code sections of the CHL laws, on and on.

The range portion is simply a qualification. You must score 90% or better to pass, and you must shoot both a revolver and semi-auto.

You should enjoy it. Are you doing the 3 day or 5 day?

    lol

I did the three day, but I believe the other 2 days is on learning methods of instruction. Sort of an instructor development mini-course.

I was already licensed by the DPS as a Private Security Bureau Classroom and Firearms Instructor, so I guess that qualified me for the shorter course.

The days can be long, and a few of the instructors can get boring; some of the other students will get on your nerves. ;)

Overall you should have a pretty good time.

When I first started looking for a date there wasn't one, then all of a sudden they posted one. With the hassles I had, if I were you, I would apply now. You would be way up on the list for next year. I hesitated applying till I saw them post a schedule, might have been better to apply before then. I just wasn't sure if I could move my customers around on short notice. I am a fishing and hunting guide full time, so schedules and loss of business are tough. I'm just glad I made it in. I have many of my regular customers that are lining up for the course.:patriot:

I agree. When I signed up, they made it sound like the class could fill up before the application deadline and anyone applying after that would have to wait a year for the next class.

With as slow as DPS is, I'd apply as early as possible. Of course I can't follow my own advice and I sent my application in pretty close to the deadline. Fortunately I did make it in time and will be going in June.

Yep. The deadline was 4/15, mine arrived there 3/27 Express Mail and was lost till 4/14. After MANY phone calls mine was found along with 25 others they had misplaced. So 24 other guys or gals owe me a beer. LOL I say 24, because one was a friend of mine from here, and he's too cheap to buy a beer.

    Sounds like a plan.

What do you plan to do with your weapons while in class etc.? I was wondering if they have some place for us to lock them up. I figure to be on the safe side I'm taking two revolvers and two Semi-autos. Don't really want them laying around just anywhere. Even thought about installing my small safe in my P/up.

I would lock them in my trunk. If you do not have one of those, then secured in your luggage in your room.

Just returned from the short course today. We took our guns with us every day and left them locked in the car at the DPS HQ, MUCH safer than leaving them at the hotel. Be warned, there is a dress code for the entire class, not just the range. Collared shirts, long pants and closed toe shoes for the classroom as well. We saw several people turned away for this....

Thanks for the heads up on the dress code. Other than that how as the class? Did you make it? Did they issue certificate or do you have to wait?

    How was the range?

    Come on. Spill the beans.

Dress code, were jeans acceptable or did they want slacks?

    Thanks again for the info.

DPS has a very nice range for qualification. Jeans are fine, Upon completion of the firing portion, provided you have passed the written and practical protion a certificate is issued. However, you will not be able to instruct until DPS enters your certificate in the system (could take up to two weeks) and you have ordered and recieved your TR 100s. (could take up to an additonal two to four weeks as you cannot order them until your certificate has been entered into the system. Over all the course is very well put together, I would not worry about too much, if you passed your CHL you should not have a problem passing the instructor portion. My understanding is that you guys will have an additional day of classes on instructing. You will leave with a good understanding of the law and howe it applies. Feel free to PM me if you have any specific questions.... And as far as securing them in your vehicle you will be just fine placing them out of view in the cab of your truck. I dont forsee too many people trying to break into cars at DPS HQ.
