I received some interesting information yesterday.

I talked to a friend of mine that works for TDPS in Houston. He told me that the "local background check holdup" is the CHL Division's favorite excuse for delays in the wait times. He told me the truth is that they are SERIOUSLY understaffed and have a HUGE backlog since the elections. Apparently, they use this excuse to get people to hassle the local authorities and take the pressure off themselves.
    What "local authorities"?

    I don't buy this excuse.

Since I just hit 120 days I think I'll make some calls next week. Maybe if we get enough complaints to the right people they'll fix their staffing issue. I doubt it, but it's worth a shot.
Have you heard from them at all?

    Wait Time

It says that they 60 to get you your license by mail or inform you that you did not cut the mustard.
Today has been day 60 for me. It says that it is processing application.
I emailed CHL website info and gave my info and pin 10 days ago and this is what they wrote:

At this time we are awaiting the completion of the background investigation. Thank you for your continued patience.

Some of you posting that you have been waiting 120 does not give me very much hope that when I get home today that it will be in the mailbox.

I'm getting tired of this bologna. Today is day 70 from receiving PIN in the mail and also still "Processing Application".

I took myclass in February (add another 28 days to the day I mailed it) and still no plastic. I'm tired of waiting. I'm tired of excuses. I'm tired reasons. I'm tired of any line I keep getting fed short of "here's your license ma'am. You're not a criminal. You have paid your money".

I guess the 60 days was just a pipe dream. Now Day 61 and counting-- NOTHING

    Another Update...

    TXinvestigator,

They're saying the "Gulf Coast Authorities" and you're right, I'm not buying it either. That's what my friend told me. The "local backgoround check holdup" is just their canned excuse when people call.

And, no, I haven't heard from them which is why I decided to give them a call. According to them, they are still waiting for the results of the local background check. THE SAME EXCUSE THEY GAVE ME FOUR WEEKS AGO!!!

I could tell she was lying (or flustered) because when I asked for a number to the Gulf Coast authorities she said they didn't have a number. Yeah right, you're TDPS for crying out loud.

Harris County: 120 days since mailing, 90 days since PIN. APLICATION STILL PROCESSING. And I haven't even had so much as a traffic ticket since the mid-90's.

    Which locals?

    Hello all,
Just out of curiosity, which "locals" do DPS contact for background check? Sheriff's Dept. maybe?

Mine's not a heavily inhabited county, but we do have a lot of CHL applications ... & a lot more lately. I'm one of the "lately's". I thought I might, at some point, need to skip the middle-man and ask Jon (county sheriff) how back-logged he is.

If it's not the sheriff's office .. then who is it? Chief of police? I don't know of any others here it could be.

    Thanks,
    Penny

I know here in Aransas County it is done through the local DPS office which is located in the Public Safety Center. I know the secretary in the office and she is the one that the application info comes to for local checks. Not sure if this is the case in all locations, but it is who it comes to here.

    Background checks

    brownjessea,

What part of the state are you from? 60-90 days is pretty standard from what I've read. It's the Gulf Coast areas that are way behind due to the local background checks. Specifically, Harris and surrounding counties.

If you're from one of these area I'm calling DPS to find out what going on as I'm at almost 120 days (since mailing) now and my application is still "processing".

I live in Bexar County (San Antonio area). I'm not sure but perhaps my background may have went through quickly because I'm already a Personal Protection Officer and a prior Military Police Officer. As far as the background checks going through local municipal Sherriff's offices, I don't think that's entirely true. I believe that all background checks for CHL's have to ultimately go through the FBI. Good luck and keep checking the status online. It has to go through sooner or later.

I live in Bexar as well. I'm at 101 days today since DPS signed for my package. Other than receiving my PIN at 30 days, I haven't heard a word from them.
Two background checks must be done..one local and one FBI.

    background checks

    Thanks, everybody.

I had a background check done on me through the FBI a couple of years ago when I went to work for the city. Back then, it only took two or three weeks to come back; but of course that was before The CHL Frenzy started.

I was just curious as to how this stuff is actually done. It's no big deal, but it is interesting.

Ya know, living in a small town in a rural county, this sort of thing can have some ironies to it. Like having to wait on a background check by the FBI because that's what the rules for hiring a court clerk demand, when several people I am working for (city council and the judge) have literally known me all their lives. LOL

Thanks again for the input. I'm really enjoying the forum, btw. Nice group of folks!

Just got off the phone with DPS-Austin. STILL processing. STILL waiting on local background check.

This time the person I spoke to was very courteous. After asking a few times she finally informed me that the local bacground check is being done by the local DPS office (not sure which one). Now I just need to try and track that down.

Well, at leadt my brother in Dallas has been approved and is waiting on his to arrive in the mail. Of course, he took the class and sent in his papers over a month after I did.

Harris County: 130+ days since mailing, 100+ days since PIN. 60+ days waiting on the local background check. APLICATION STILL PROCESSING. And I haven't even had so much as a traffic ticket since the mid-90's.

As I have moved since mailing off my packet, it was suggested to me to call DPS & inform them of said move & give them my new address. The person I talked to on the phone stated I needed to send them something in writing (email would be fine).
This was all done last Friday & I have not received any notice of receipt of my email....should I call back?

    TIA,

    - Cam
