Ok so our home security system decided to go besurk at 3:00 in the morning yesterday and here I am a frequenter at the range and I used to do tactical drills with my brothers and dad with airsoft but here I am clearing a house with loaded lead in my XD... Long story short I'm wondering what does every accesorize with on their clearing weapons... Tac lights? Lasers?

P.s. My cousin had unplugged the internet router's powder cord which our phone runs through, which in turn is what the security system runs through... so when the backup battery ran out inevidently the alarm starts going besurk... Oh well... work sucked that day... nice and groggy... better at work than when I've got the piece in my hands and I am going room to room...

Yeah, but little dogs make better burglar alarms than most tech-driven alarms. ;)

A flashlight is a must; identify that target! I'm not talking about a Mini-Mag light, either; something bright will disorient a badguy if used properly. Just remember to try it out on a "dry" run sometime when your eyes are adjusted to the dark; it'll blind you pretty good, too.

Also, good tactics are a must. If you know someone is in the house, or are very sure of it, fort up with any family/friends and call 911. Going looking for trouble is a great way to find it. I'll only check if I'm not sure someone is there. The day I'm sure, I'm not going down those stairs: I'm staying at the top of them, having the wife dial 911, and shooting (the living hell out of) anybody who tries to come up until the police arrive. And I've got all night to wait.

That is sage advice (seriously, no pun intended......well, maybe a little pun was intended). Really, if you know somebody is in the house......limit your exposure. It's the best thing you can do for your family. If you go and get yourself shot, who will be left to protect the rest of your family? It's best to keep everyone together, dial 911, and have all guns ready in case someone tries to get to you. This is probably a good time (if there is more than 1 of you) to have add'l guns accessible for other members of the family.

I almost forgot, for the OP, I have a tac light on my pistol. I'd rather keep a shotgun or short rifle nearby......but I have not found a good spot to keep it from little hands (and still be accessible).

I clear the house with my Springfield 1911 TRP and my flash light.

Also to touch on what kingofwylietx said about having another gun accessible. I keep a sawed off 12 guage shotgun setting next to the bed for my wife with the simple instructions of "point & click"......after making sure it's not me coming back to bed of course!!!

I use a TRL1 on my G19. I know there are those that say weapon mounted lights have an issue because you've got to point the gun at what you want to light up. And there is some truth to that. But, the light that I use, shines a very bright 10 circle at about 7-10 yards, with a 6 or 8 foot lower intensity circle around it. This allows you to point slightly up or down and still have enough light to see an averaged sized room. Seems to work pretty well.

Hmmm that's a good point but to be honest if I am clearing a house and I've already got family nice and secure... anything or anybody that I encounter better have no damn complaints about a light with a piece of iron above it pointed in their general direction...

On a side note I have always loved your signature quote Navyguy... so true... now if only our leaders could get this through their heads...

Only my lady gets the distinct pleasure of shooting "that" gun... all intruders have to settle with pajama pants and a fully loaded XD9SC...

I'm quite happy with that arrangement though... she is too...

Apologies, I didn't realize I had to check my sense of humor at the door before posting in this thread.

I've got a TLR-1, too. I've done some practice with it like what I mentioned above about letting my eyes adjust to darkness then lighting up a room with it to see how bad the "splash-back" would be. Trust me; that light is bright enough that if you shine it at the floor, or better yet the ceiling, you'll be able to see people in the room with you well enough to tell whether or not you know who they are.

A real tactical light (IE: not a Mini-Mag Lite) is bright not so that you can see better; you'll probably see a bit worse. It's bright so that it will cause retina-searing pain and discomfort in whoever you shine it at, causing them to look away.

I've tried that effect, too with my NF-2. Shut the lights off, go to bed for an hour so my eyes adjust and then have my wife shine it at my head from across the room. It hurts, and you can't see for a while unless you turn the lights on. And even then, you'll be seeing a spot in your vision for a bit.

Sage is right as rain ... I keep a cell fone next to my 1911 and Surefire 9P ... just my wife and me, so if she's next to me, there's no reason to risk my life or hers trying to clear the house... call the cops, set up where you can see the access door to the bedroom and see what happens ... if the BG enters the room, he gets shot by me ... if the cops get there first and he doesn't surrender, he gets shot by the cops .. bad for him, but as we all know crime doesn't pay .. unless youre on wall street or are a politician ...

You never want to say always in a "gun fight" so Texas Teacher if you are planing on your family be all secure while the room clearing going on don't, it is dangerous.
I use a mini mag with a three bulb LED replacement (there was a tail switch but I broke it) for clearing my house. If that is not available I will go with my 3D mag light that I carry on duty, also an led. I assure you both will blind you. I will say that I do not like weapon mounted lights. If I had a weapon that would accept one I would probably have to have one. Just plan on unorganized chaos when something goes bad. I don't know what your living situation is but my family is me and my fiance and for one more month my mother and I plan on securing the intruder first then the family. But that is me you need something for you and your situation, and you and your family will need to be the ones that decide on that.
