Just purchased a synthetic stock for my SKS, got the stock conversion completed except for the gas tube assembly upper guard. In the instructions it says to remove the pin holding the rear hand guard sheetmetal cover. Right, that's great except I can't get the pin to even budge. I have 2 different gas tube assemblies, and both are the same way. Is there a trick to this removal or something cause I wouldn't think it should be this hard to remove a pin.

    Thanks,
    Bill

I bought an ATI synthetic stock fro my SKS, but haven't had a chance to replace the wood stock, yet. A friend of mine did his a while back, and I didn't think he had too much trouble doing it. I'll ask him if had had any trouble with the upper guard.

Getting the cross pin started is a real bugger. Most are staked/ground relatively smooth. I have replaced a few and it took some work. Once you get the pin started it's not so bad.

That must explain my problem then. I've pounded away at it for a while and it hasn't moved at all. Guess maybe its time for a larger hammer. Seems weird though that its so hard to remove. Might have to see if I can drill it out.

Just an update. I finally got the stupid pin out, after using a self striking punch and a 2lb hammer. Got the pin out and the new plastic upper guard installed. Fits and works great. Had to do some filing on the new Gas tube assembly but it fits nicely now.

Yes that always seems to be the problem with doing a stock swap on these rifles. I just leave mine stock, I wish they made a wooden dragunov stock, that would be cool
