I'm definitely rusty. But, it was good to get out there and throw some lead downrange!

Great meeting other Dallas Target and Action Shooters members.

Definitely a good time as usual. I've been doing the Real Steel matches (4th Sunday) since Oct. of last year and the Metal Mania matches (3rd Subday) since November or December of last year. They get sort of addicting, but fun as heck. The Real Steel Match is the more technical one, while the Metal Mania is more laid back in the layouts I think. Both are super fun though.

If you are the only Steve listed on the final score sheet (its posted on the DPC website now) you didn't do to bad. Which squad were you in (which bay you start in)?

The more I read about this from forum members the more intrigued I am.
I guess I need to check the web site out and see about getting hooked up.

We cross-posted Sunday's range time on the DTAS site as well, and it looks like at least 3 of us are coming. So you might not have much of a choice as to whether you hook up with some of us or not.

There a real hoot. Its sort of a entry level competitive type of shooting. 5 Stages, 5 runs on each one. Typically 5 targets on a stage, sometimes a 6th. Hit each one once. Time starts at the buzzer ends on your last shot. +5 seconds for each plate not hit, maximum 30 second time per a run. Drop your lowest time on each stage, sum up the rest. Shooting is done from a standing position in a 3x3 box.

No moving and no mandatory mag changes, but some shooters change mags either due to small mag capacity or needing more rounds. The 3rd Sunda matches are the best ones to come too as a new shooter, while the 4th Sunday matches are more technical and require some more skill to shoot well in.

The matches are open to anyone ($15 fee for nonmembers) bring at least 250 rounds (I usually use between 150 - 200 a match). Extra mags and speedloaders are a good idea, they recommend atleast 4 single stack or three hi-caps, but a few more never hurts.

Shooting starts at 9:30 typically so getting there around 9 is a good idea, and usually runs until about 1 - 1:30 when there are a lot of shooters. Typically there are 35 - 45 shooters, and they run in 5 squads of up to 15, but usually around 7 - 12.

Shooters are ranked by weapons - stock or auto open, stock or open revovler, and stock or open .22. A gun is open if its got a dot or a comp/porting. Within the types are novice, D, C, B, A, AA shooters. Novice shooters shoot from the low ready, all others draw and fire from a holster.

If you are really interested in checking it out come on out and give it a try. Its really a good time.

Went to the match on 5/24 and had a great time. My fellow shooters were very helpful to this novice and provided a lot of feedback on my style (or lack there of) and I learned a lot. Everyone was great and I would love to do this again.
A bit of advice...those itsy, bitsy little steel targets get smaller and smaller as the day goes on. At least there weren't dancing around, another hour and they may have.

    Keep shooting,
    Scott R.

    Thanks for the info.
Years ago I shot a form of silhouette that was timed and you had areas you had to hit to score.
It was broke down by areas of the body.
Wounding shots, single kill shot, ect...
It was a lot of fun.
These posts have me thinking of how much fun that was.
Well I better start buying some more mags and a few more speed loaders.

I was in the group with Jerry M as the leader and started with the long targets on the 5th stage.

Here's the link for the results.

    Real Steel

For my first match I did pretty good, finished first in my class (OK, so I was the only one in my class - Novice).

You got to start someplace. Couple more times and you'll be ready to come swim with the holster drawing crowd. I was in C class for the second time this last match. Its usually pretty large, but was only two of us this time. Seems like the D and A class groups have gotten pretty large lately, and the open guys, whew. Not sure were alot of those folks came from, but definitely has me thinking I'll be leaving the race gun at home for a while longer.
