    Pete,

You are not going to trade that sucker in for another? No tax savings for you then if you sell it out right...

Depends on the deal, my friend. If I can sell it outright at $18.5, I'll just about break even when considering the tax savings. I am working all the angles.

Although this statement is true, if you intend to purchase another vehicle from a dealer at the time of private sale ask the dealership to do what is called an "in and out". Basically what this is is showing that you traded your old vehicle in and the dealer is selling it to your customer. This way you only pay sales tax on the amount of trade difference. In this case if you sell your truck for $18,500 that will net you a tax savings of $1156.25 (auto sales tax is 6.25%). If any dealer wants to charge more then the $50 document fee or refuses to do it at all then find somewhere else to buy a new vehicle. Some national dealers such as Lithia and Auto Nation will not do this. The reason is they are corperate owned and on paper this is technically a sale. A sale that shows zero profit. Actually a sale that shows a net loss of several hundered dollars after pac and bs fees charged to the dealer.

That's a great win win win in most cases but you can't expect a dealer to do it for free. I've done it on occasion but you need have a deal put together that allows the dealer to make a little something. Otherwise, it's usually close enough that it's not a deal killer to just sell yours and buy theirs separately.

Too many time people expect dealers to jump at the chance to process the transfer because they're nice people. Some dealers will but have a flat $500 for example, for which they'll do it. That's fair if you've structured a good deal. A lot less hassle for you too.

I was a sales manager for a rather large dealership for several years. We never ever hesitated to do this for a customer. There is no real incurred cost to doing this. All's that is involved is the F&I rep printing the bill of sale and related paperwork. The $50 doc fee (max allowed by state law) will cover the cost of time taken by the title clerk to process the paper work. This also offers an opportunity for F&I to sell a service contract to the buyer as well. A dealership should look at this as an opportunity to gain an extra customer.
As for a $500 charge by the dealer, every bit if that goes into the owners pocket because the salesperson and F&I are not paid a commission for this transaction. Don't let them BS you into thinking otherwise.
