    Allright,

Ever since I can remember I have wanted to own an M1a/M14. I almost bought one the other day, but I stopped myself because its some expensive. What are everyones thoughts on the model that one should buy. Specifically, between the standard full size model (22 inch barrel) and the scout squad model (18 inch barrel). I plan on using it for range/marksmanship, etc... just to play with and maybe hog hunting on the land. Thoughts, comments, concerns. I want to know what yall think.

I would get the 22 inch barrel. You never know, but you might just want to shoot NRA High Power matches some day. Even though most shoot the AR there are still a few of us that shoot our M1 Garand or M1A once in a while just to let the AR shooters know there's more than one legal service rifle out there. The NRA has a separate M1A match at the Nationals at Camp Perry that they started in 2007.

Thanks for the suggestion. Im leaning toward the 22 in., I have the tendency to go into the what if rationalization when buying guns. Plus the standard model is a couple of hundred less than the scout squad, so that helps. I also really like the feel and balance of the standard. I looked at the socom 16 just out of curiousity and it felt really nose heavy. The scout squad has good balance, but something about the standard just felt better. Again thanks for the suggestion. Do you own an M1A, I'd be intersted to hear about your set up if you do.

If you buy the 22-in. it is worth it to get the loaded model. Spend good money on an M1A, it's worth it and it will take you further than an expensive AR15.

I totally agree with this. I have the Loaded model and it shoots like a dream. You will not be disappointed one bit with it and the upgrades are well worth it.

BUT they exist. Now someone needs to re-barrel an M1A for .50bmg! Can you imagine that?! Now THAT would be sweet! ;)

Thing is... the M1A doesn't need a conversion to be worthy. It's already factory accurate, it's already factory reliable (gas piston), and it's already chambered in a real caliber.

You have to spend how much to even get similarity out of an AR? How much is an SR25 these days?

Go get yourself the rest of your mighty mall ninja tactical .22 WCF rifle and I'll bring the M1.

It's too bad the poor black poodle shooters get such a bad rap... I like mine, it shoots just fine out to 600 yds so far. While I agree the .30 has MUCH better punch when it gets where it's going.... the AR is lighter, ammo is lighter and is very deadly in the right hands. That being said... I would LOVE to have either a M1A or Garand! Just need to scrape together the $$$. Oh and for now I have the major cailber covered with my other AR.....in .50 BMG. MG

Back "in the day..." We fired what was called "rattle battle". 6 shooters with M1-A's start at the 600 yd line, prone position with a stack of loaded mags beside each shooter. 4 targets come up and all 6 shoot as many rounds as possable until the targets go back down(60 sec.) Then move up (closer) to the 300 yd line. sitting position, stack of remaining mags... targets go up, everyone shoots again...(60 sec) If there are any rounds left after the 300 you move down to the 200 and fire again offhand the remaining ammo. Now, figure 10 teams, 6 shooters each all shooting as much rounds down range as they can in 1 min. I wish I would have had a video camera back then.... All I remember is that it was way fun! That does sound pretty fun. So how many rounds do you get total to start with?
