We were at CostCo on Sunday browsing the selections and we came across a Winchester gun safe for $499.

    Like seen here: winchestersafes.com

I don't remember the exact model though. It looks like the Legend series.

Anyone have any experience with these? For a safe this size that's a pretty decent price, especially if the quality is right.

Those are made by Granite Security in Fort Worth. I bought one direct from them. Mine is not branded "Winchester" but it is the same safe and I'm pretty sure it would fall into the Legend series. You might give them a call (number at web site) sometimes they have overstocks and "scratch and dent" sales. They have (had) and employee who did the deliveries as a side job. $100, delivered, installed and leveled.

It's a nice safe, There are better onces. I think those, as well as most in the under $1500 price range have UL rating RSC (residential security containers) which purists will not consider a true "safe"

Hard thing buying a safe. You got to figure all the guns you have, the ones you are going to have, want to have, and all the crap that your wife thinks is important.

Lemme put it this way....I've got the largest single-door Ft. Knox makes - 1800 or so lbs empty. Holds a LOT of pistols hangin' on that door, but ah'm gonna be out of room when the Kimber Pro Elite I just made a deal on gets here - an' when I bought the safe 5 years ago, I figgered it'd hold everything I'd ever want! That means yet another safe - and it will be another Ft. Knox, simply because it's rated to be one of the best for the money. It's REAL tempting to buy a cheaper one - but it's protecting a LOT of stuff!

I just got an add paper fromTractorSupply CO. and they have
a Cannon wide body that is 60x40x24 inches and says 36 gun capacity.
799.99 might be worth looking into.

    Nice safe's
Bought the taller 30 gun version.
Removed all the cloth covered sheet rock and added 2 layers of 5/8 inch firewall rated drywall and then put the original back in.

Figure that would ad at least 20-30% more fire time.

If you get the one with the touch pad make yourself a fake battery on a stick that plugs into the wall with a 9volt power brick.

I wanted in mine the other day and had to rob the batt from the smoke detector to get it open.:banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead:

Also, make sure you bolt it down to the floor. We had a guy down the road on vacation and they took the 1800 pound fort knox, it was empty, I had them all in my safe as he was afraid soon to be ex would come raid it before the locksmith could come replace the tumblers.

They found evidence of 2 different pallet jacks and a lift gate truck.

Sucks to live in the boonies sometimes

So how does that work? you put this deal in there and then leave a cord dangling to the wall socket?

You take a 1x2 and cut it down to the width and thickness of a 9 volt battery.
    Mine is 1 foot long

Then you take the leads (toy end) from a broken kids toy and hand drill a 3/16 hole through the connections nubs

Then screw it to the end of the board.

take a 12 volt power brick and cut the end off the cord.

make sure you test the polarity of the wires

solder the wires to the leads from the stick connection

    Test the polarity again

once you get it set up, I just wrapped the cord around the stick and stuck it in a clear tote and set it on top of the safe as a just in case need a battery type thing.

I am also working on the design of a "Car battery" version (stepping down 12 volt to 9 volt).

I will get pix and sketch posted on a new thread in the next few days or so

Wouldnt it be easier just to have a spare 9 volt battery?
What happens if the power goes out & you need to get into the safe?

    Exactly what I was thinking.

Hate to dog pile, but my thoughts too. I though you had come up with a way to use the AC adapter as the primary power, with the battery coming into play only when and if the power went out. That would be great, and don't know why safe manufacturers don't offer such a feature.

I get into my safe quite a bit, and only change by battery once a year. I have never even heard the warning beeps, which indicate a low battery, and my manual say once they start, you should start thinking about changing the battery, but it should still work for awhile.

I did it just because I could.

IOW, you did what I do sometimes - which is, come up with the most convoluted way of doin' sumthin' just 'cuz it was stuff ya had on hand, an' as ya went along it kinda grew.....

Remind me ta tell ya 'bout the ratchet-drive tap I fabbed one time.....<G>
