I bought a stun gun for personal safety. it's 950KV. is that legal in Texas? i went down to the local gun shop, they said it was. I wanted to ask here and make sure. They also said to be sure not to bring it inside a courthouse or government buillding. i'm ok with that. but it got me to thinking. i'd really like to know exactly where i'm not permitted to have one of these on my person. Mine conviniently comes with a belt holster, i just got to make sure its legal, and need to know where i must leave it behind to avoid getting into hassle. don't want any hassle from this, just want to protect myself in case i'm ever attacked.

    thanks so much.

p.s. got some pepper spray too.

While I'm not gonna dissuade you from thoughts of personal safety, I will share one thought with you concerning stun guns.

You have to be close enough to touch your attacker for it to work.

i realize these things. i also ordered a pepper spray thing. i do not wish to get a handgun license. i realize that with those two, i should be protected, unless they have a gun.

i guess its legal though right? i was told it was. i just wanted to double check. also wanted to know, where not to carry the stun gun (on my small holster) to avoid any hassle.

    thank you

I am a certified instructor on Pepper Spray (OC) and Taser. A touch stun device will incapacitate your grandmother and really piss off a determined attacker. You will likely end up with an electric suppository.

I don't recall seeing anything in the penal code prohibiting them, but I would still recommend a firearm for personal protection.

it will anger a determined attacker. will it deter them enough from a repeated attack ?

my unit is a 950KV dragon fire.

also, if i had pepper spray both pepper spray and a stun gun on me, what might be the order of use in terms of preference, in terms, if someone were to attack me ? i tend to want to reach for the stun gun, since it sits on my belt holster, pepper spray would likely be in my pocket on a key chain. which would take a little more time, if someone were to try and hurt me. chances are if someone were to attack me, they would do so because i'd be defending my own property, being my laptop that i lug around with me, or my wallet. i realize i can't use either the stun gun or the pepper spray, until a hand or weapon is raised in a gesture as to harm. so any struggle for my laptop, or wallet, is "fair game" (thats correct right? trying to dearm me of my laptop in theft is not grounds for use of a stun gun alone until they try and hurt me), i suppose *until they use force*, which i'm sure they may, because those sorts of people are desperate.

i am a mentally disabled individual, for that reason, i cannot get a gun license.

i understand that its legal to carry except in a courtroom or government office. so i'm ok with that.

i've been making efforts to get out of the house lately and go have bites to eat at eateries and things, and actively go to doctors appointments, instead of putting them off, and trying to go to coffee shops, to help get my over my anxiety problems. i have encounted, not all the time, but at certain times, certain people, that look, somewhat spooky, in that they look like if given the right time opportunity, that might be inclined to take advantage of other people. and seeing as i lug around a laptop with me, i figured i'd be an easy target. since i'm not strong, and i run into these scary looking people, i thought i'd try and help defend myself, because i know there are people in the world that are actually, impulsive, desperate, and stupid.

will it deter them enough from a repeated attack ?

Several year ago, a HPD officer I know was involved in an indecent with a "guy with a gun". Several officer, were on the scene with this "guy" who was jacked up on drugs, was taking shots. It turned into a gun fight that finally had the guy n his knees after 10-15 rounds to the body. He was still shooting, just not as accurately. If I recall, he said they guy ended up with 28 rounds in his body when he finally gave up the ghost.

I think it's great to have a weapon for protection, but having multiples to use in progression may not be very effective to use. I don't know the laws, but I'd start digging through Texas Penal code to know for sure.

    Good luck to you.

Touch stun electrical discharge devices sound very good on paper. However, they only deliver pain, to a small area. Tasers deliver pain to wider areas and override muscle imlulses with an impulse that causes all efected muscles to contract (very forcefully) and remain contracted throughout the cycle.

I have endured self inflicted touch stuns numerous times. They hurt. Sometimes they hurt alot! They do nothing but cause pain. An intoxicated or drugged person does not feel pain like a sober, non-drugged person. An angry or mentally ill person may not feel pain at all.

A decent OC spray delivered to the eyes is far more likely to give you the desired results. OC causes pain and an involuntary closing of the eyes. If the subject is unable to see you, you have a window of opportunity to escape or maneuver into a more advantageous position to overcome the adversary.

I have been sprayed hundreds of times by OC and it SUCKS! I have developed a level of resistance (or perhaps tolerance) for OC. It still hurts for hours but I have learned to work through it.

I have been on the receiving end of 4 taser rides. That is overwhelming and akin to an out of body experience. I have an idea how it feels to be beheaded by the Guillotine. It felt like my body was detached from my head. I wanted to react, but had no connection with the muscles in my body.

is a stun gun on a belt holster considered a weapon ? i dont consider them weapons. they are used for defensive protection not offensive things. thats spooky. i'm hoping you all can give me more information. i'll wait around and see. i know they are legal, thats all i know. i'm guessing its ok to keep on your belt too on its assigned belt holster. i'll wait around for more replies. i definitely dont want to be shot, because i had a stun gun on my belt :/ i dont drink or do drugs, i'm only concerned for my own safety.

I applaud you for researching online. You have some very specific questions, which seem to be difficult to answer. We are merely a group of guys and gals that are (msotly) from Texas that come here to discuss firearms and related issues. I can see why you would draw a correlation between the two, as it a question of personal defense. You were very candid in saying that you have a disability. This may open a door to you for getting the answers you seek, if nobody here can do so, to a comfortable extent for you. Is there an advocacy group for your disability? If so, they may be able to give you specific legal advice or find the answers for you. It is difficult for people to give definitive legal advice on the internet, as they do not wish to open themselves up to any liability. I'm just trying to think of a way for you to contact somebody that is more familiar with the laws that will pertain to your questions.

Stun Guns are not regulated by Texas law. You can carry one anywhere. Of course, any business, residence or government location can prohibit a stun gun from being taken onto the property.

    The term "weapon" is not defined in the penal code. Although there is a chapter called "weapons" (ch 46) there is no law addressing just "weapons". In law, when a code does not define a word the common definition is used. Merriam Webster defines weapon as;

Main Entry: 1weap·on Pronunciation: \ˈwe-pən\ Function: noun Etymology: Middle English wepen, from Old English wǣpen; akin to Old High German wāffan weapon, Old Norse vāpn Date: before 12th century 1 : something (as a club, knife, or gun) used to injure, defeat, or destroy 2 : a means of contending against another

Even section 46.03, possession of prohibied weapons, which lists places certain weapons cannot be carried like schools, polling places on election day, courts, airports, etc., does not list a Stun Gun.

However, those places can make carry of a stun there illegal under the criminal trespass law by probibiting carry there. For example, you are not going to be able to carry a stun gun past the security checkpoint at an airport. Federal Law probably prohibits it, but if they post a sign prohibiting a stun gun or tell you you cannot carry it past security and you refuse to leave with it or leave it there, then you could be charged under Texas law with Criminal Trespass.

I would be happy to try to answer any more specific questions you have.

Hi...bigchiefsps...just joined site. Regarding stun guns in Texas...perfectly legal anywhere...except govt buildings, etc...probably good rule is just not take them where you could not take your firearm...if you have a chl. As a retired "law dog" ...deputy sheriff, probation and parole officer....I never pulled my stun gun and gave it a good three second "crack" where the suspect did not back off. Stun guns have a great mental effect on people. I have a chl....renewed twice....but I carry a stun gun as a last resort before lethal force. I carry a glock .40 with "golden sabres" ammo.....if I have to let loose a round....pretty much it's over. True warrior don't want to take a life and it's a painful last resort...but anyway...stun guns are very effective....

Ive been hit with one of those stun guns. The stunner got a face full of fist. Pepper spray works great if there is no breeze. Why dont you want your chl? You can NEVER be too protected.

Stun guns are not statutorily prohibited at government buildings under Texas law.

While stun guns may "scare" someone, they are not effective in use.

ririan you seem to be trolling for a validation of your choice and not looking for helpful information. You man need to step back, re-read the responses to your questions and not be afraid to admit a questionable position or decision and go from there. You seem to want the group to tell you something they don't believe, that your choice is a good idea.
