Has anyone been in a CHL class where someone could not qualify in the shooting part? I've never heard of anyone not passing, and I wonder if they just let eveyone go even if the can't hit the broad side.

There was a guy who came to the range portion of my class, apparently had been in the previous class and had not passed the shooting. He passed this time, still looked like he was struggling alot

Was he blind or drying out from the booze or dope????
    Hell I passed with a 187 with my 9mm
Which is better than I shot with my 357mag at the Bulls-eye match

definately seemed like there was some eyesight issues, some firearm issues, i wasn't close enough to see what "the cause" may have been, but after every sequence of fire he had alibi's to shoot

While I cannot speak for all CHL instructors, I can tell you that we can lose our instructor certification and face severe penalities for passing a failing student.

I have had students who had to retake the test (the CHL rules gives them three attempts) in order to pass. The odd thing is those few who have had to retake all scored over 200 on the second attempt.

I must have been placed between to friends because they kept looking aorund me talking to each other. Neither of them knew how to operate their glocks (lock the slide back, etc) I think they were both able to pass though.

I've failed at least one that I can remember. I've also had several who failed the first attempt and passed on the second. I'll give them pointers if they're struggling. I'll even help them load their magazine, but I never fudge on the score. They get what they get.

That's sad too. They only need to be able to pull the trigger and put holes on the right place (which I can't see how anyone could miss) I'm really surprised basic pistol handling proficiency isn't part of it but it is what it is.

That's good to know. Scoring enough to pass shouldn't be a problem for anyone who has at least shot a couple hundred rounds, and has proper grip and aiming techniques. But the shooting, gun handling portion is in there for a reason.

My wife took the class a couple weeks ago and two of the people accompanying her failed the shooting portion of the test. This was at Top Gun in Houston.

    ...making one little hole.

That reminds me of a time when I was taking one of my renewal classes with a good friend. With a little bit of friendly competition going on, we were both going into the last round of fire with perfect scores. Not wanting to lose, I put my very last shot right above the shoulder outline on his target. He was very upset at his one "flyer," and I know he wanted kick my ass when I told him what I'd done...after we were done with the class. ;)

One of my clients in my computer consulting business failed the shooting portion the first time. She was a newcomer to firearms, and after some additional practice passed easily the second time. It happens and if it is a true test it should not be automatic. Good for her for being persistent. She is very adamant about 2A rights and it makes me happy that she finally decided to go for it (she is 60ish).

Sadly during my second renewal class I was on the line next to an elderly lady attempting to qualify with a Model 26 Glock. Twice during the course of fire..........the instructor came to her and made some comment about nice feeling gun and fired 2-five round magazines into her target. She barely squeaked by with his 10 hits. I'm sure the instructor thought he was doing her a favor but somewhere down the road that could be a deadly mistake.

He's not an "instructor", regardless of his license to administer the class. He should be an ex-instructor licensee.

I have not taken a CHL class. But I'm a commissioned security Officer. Is the firing portion the same? In the class I was in there were two female students that required some extra attention. The instructors pulled both of them from the firing line and discussed some thins with them and I guess went over some things with them. They did pretty good the second time around if I remember correctly. But if the CHL course of fire is the same, I don't see how you could really fail it.

It might be. A level 3 instructor can use the CHL course, or the DPS Practical Combat Pistol course or the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center Practical Pistol Course.

The CHL course uses a B27 target and you shoot 20 rounds from 3 yards, 20 from 7 yards and ten from 15. There are no timed reloads, one handed, kneeling or barricade fire.

I'm pretty sure that is what we shot. Thanks again.
