A friend of mine got her CHL from the state of Utah. She took the class at a Range outside of Florence on 183. She says its as good as having her Texas CHL and that it is valid in 29 states including Texas.

The thing is it only cost $85, it is only a four hour class and it requires no range time. I have been looking at getting my Texas CHL and I know it requires more class time, range time and it cost more. Has anyone done this? Will this license provide the same CHL rights as the Texas license?

I am reviewing the information that I can find on the web to try and figure this out. I just wanted to throw it out here and see if anyone had any experience with it.

    Thanks

Very common but you need to look into it further.

I'd rather have a Texas CHL, being a Texas resident. And I'm not sure if Utah passed a new bill which made it such that only Utah residents could be instructors. The concern was lack of any control by the State when people in other States are doing their class.

 Sorry but that's just wrong. If you live in Texas and want to carry concealed..........take the full class and by all means.........go shoot!

You can carry in Texas on a Utah CHL. The question I have for you is will you know Texas laws regarding use of force and where you can carry?

Ya, but you save about $200!!!!!

(Just being funny, because it's very true.)

Most people do not get out of state CHL's just to carry in Texas, they get them to carry in states that do not reciprocate with Texas, but do with those other states. Or to expand the number states they can carry in. Frankly, I can't imagine learning all the laws and differences in all those other states.

Check out this site for a small FAQ about it. It's where I took my Utah class.

I don't know about others, but Linda and Marty hold their Utah class in conjunction with the Texas renewal class, so you do get the Texas classroom part. During the class, they will point out the differences between Texas and Utah laws, but it IS a Texas renewal class.

For what it's worth, we don't honor out of state CHLs when we do the 4473 forms. I don't know if other gun shops do the same or not.

I would definitely expect that. I can't see how a resident of one state buying a gun in that state would expect another state's CHL to get them past the NICS check.

i had considered this in the past since utah carry permits were valid in nevada while texas licenses were not.

but recently, Nevada stopped accepting the Utah license and the Florida license, so i'll just stick to texas.

I think people are overlooking one thing. Considering the lengthy wait time for Texas CHL's at the moment, if the Utah CHL can be obtained in a much shorter period of time (anyone have an idea on the wait for the Utah CHL?), then you will be able to legally carry sooner while you are still waiting for the Texas CHL to show up. I like that idea. I've had some acquaintences that have had to wait as long as 6 months for their Texas CHL, and I really don't like the idea of being unarmed for 6 months. That's plenty of time to be the unfortunate victim of a crime. ;)

Good point. My co-worker took his Utah CHL in Oregon while he was taking his Oregon CCW class. The Utah card showed up within the month.

As Sig Fiend mentioned, Texans can carry concealed while waiting the absurd amount of time for DPS to issue it.

On the other end of the spectrum, if your TX CHL is expiring it would be very smart to have another state permit on hand so that it can cover gaps if need be.

Also keep the other permit in your safe at home and out of your wallet. If your wallet gets lost or stolen with your CHL, you cannot carry until it gets replaced! It'd be real easy to just go home, get the other state permit and continue carrying while your TX CHL gets replaced, which could be a while!

I'm currently carrying on my WA permit. I took my CHL class 2/15 and have been waiting since. It's mid-July!

Getting both as a renewal to your Texas CHL might be a good idea. An extra $65~ get's you two licenses and a few more states to legally carry in. I'll give that some serious consideration when mine is up.

I'm actually thinking of looking for an instructor around here for the Utah permit. I do read that they are starting to get backed up as well but not as bad as TX. I believe they try to get it returned by 60 days, but 90 is probably more realistic.

Maybe by the end of the year when my CHL should be here so I can gain some overlap time

The info at the link "crossfire" looked interesting. That's pretty close for me... you too I beleive. Read the part about getting instruction for reloading. No cost. The guy comes to your place, and you pay his milage and give him a ham sandwich and a glass of tea for his troubles.

YOU are just wrong. We should ALL be able to carry guns without ANY kind of permission. In fact that is the law of the land, at least according to The Constitution (but I know that "piece of paper" doesn't really matter anymore). So I say whatever is the cheapest easiest route to get one of these "unnecessary" permits is the one EVERYBODY should take.
