Making an intelligent decision on liberty vs security first requires a rational assessment of the terror risk. According to this article, however, the human brain is wired to wildly miscalculate that risk:

"Edward Snowden’s revelations about the federal government’s mass collection of phone records, emails, web browsing history and social media interactions have prompted a collective contemplation of a critical question: Should we surrender Constitutionally-enshrined liberties for the government’s promise of security against terror?

Unfortunately, our ability to reach a rational decision on this question is hampered by our humanity: While the homo sapiens brain has come a long way, it’s still wired to assess potential threats with emotion rather than reason. As a result, we’re susceptible to extreme exaggeration of the threat of terrorism and may be making a catastrophically bad bargain with our essential freedoms."

It's simple marketing. This has never really been about "terrorism". It's been about using a buzzword to sell a product. Look at commercial marketing, you'll see the use of certain words rise and fall over time because those words sell product.

Those words are often chosen because they're linked to fear, and fear is a great seller. Recent words are things like "transfat". Nobody knows WTF the stuff is, just that it's baaaaaaad. "Terrorism" is the same thing, only it's government and politicians using it to sell. The problem is, they're not using it to sell margarine (which is horrible stuff you probably shouldn't eat, "transfats" or not), they're using it to sell more control for themselves.

We could prevent more substantially more deaths by subsidizing bathtub texture tape for every bath in America, for significantly less money.

Its never been about safety. Its about control.

    WOW, YOU GET IT!

When govts begin using FEAR as justification for their actions you can bet the Storm Troopers are not far off. We are seeing this now with our govt.

“The odds of dying in a terrorist attack are a lot lower than they are of dying in a car accident, unfortunately,” Obama said. ”The general rule is just show some common sense and some caution.” - O

Dear Mr POTUS, Unfortunately, I think you're protecting us too much thus robbing us of our liberties and unnecessarily increasing taxes in the name of too much security.

There's a 100% chance everyone that's reading this message today will die in the next 100 years anyway.

I'd rather not spend my limited time here on Earth with a bunch of jackwagons using force to try and control me.
