Hi everyone. I live in between San Antonio and Austin. I have never owned a gun before but Ive been keeping some money set aside and Im ready to get started. Im looking to get my first handgun pretty soon. A buddy of mine told me about this site so I figured Id join. Glad to be a part of the boards.

    Welcome aboard ag1052 from SA.

Hang around, read and asked all the questions you want. There are lots of folks here willing to help and even go out of their way to help out someone new to firearms.

We also have TGT shoots from time to time and they are a great place to meet and talk to all sorts of good people.

Thanks Everyone! I dont really have any... I had a bb gun as a kid and would shoot soda cans but thats about it. Ive got a friend in SA who is going to take me out to a range just to get my feet wet and make sure I know what Im doing first time out. I went to cabelas the other day and held several handguns. Im pretty sure Im going to go with an XD (out of what Ive held it felt the best) but not sure if I want the compact or subcompact. I may rent them from a range just to try them out. I mainly want it for home defense but I think Ill get my chl too. Not sure how much Ill carry it but it would be nice to have the option.

What going to be good for one might not be good for another. There are many variables to consider, so going out and renting a few is a great idea.

Heh, I went to school "between Austin and San Antonio"

Nice area. Your buddy has the right idea. Get some range time in first, rent if you can. I own guns and I still rent just so I can try out different guns.

Hello ! Have you considered starting with a .22 rimfire, the way many of us started out ? Less expensive, less noise, less recoil, & easier to handle for a novice.
Thanks for the advice. My only concern is Im most likely just going to get one gun (If I get more than one it will be a long time down the road before I get another). Id like this first one to be good for self defense.

Can anyone tell me how to set my avatar? Thanks

    Welcome

If only one gun for a while then get something realistic for self defense.
But as said, rent / borrow 1st
Come join us at the Nov Hicksville meet, I can assure you there will be a large selection to try
