Broke my Kydex J hook

Anyone know the cheapest place to order replacements? I'll even look at replacement metal ones. I had an extra set of metal J hook tuckable clips, but I don't remember where I got them since they pre-date the computer crash.

The kydex J hooks lasted me about 2 years carrying a lightweight commander in a tuckable carry every day. I had heard of the possibility of them breaking, but this is my first experience with one failing. Didn't break all the way, and the IWB carry kept it in a decent position, but my holster does have 2 clips. I had always used metal clips before this and just clipped it over my pants but under my belt.

Anyway, who's got a good source for replacement holster parts that don't cost too much money?

Contact the maker of your holster and they should source you pretty quick from their inventory. Least, if it were mine I'd send it comp.

Thanks for the offer Monica, but it's for a tuckable IWB holster which you didn't get around to selling. But just in case you've got stuff laying around, I'll put up a pic.


And no point in contacting the holster manufacturer. They use metal clips, which is what I have switched to for now. It wasn't their part that broke, it was something I bought and added myself.

I might try and stick with the metal, but the longer kydex clips does leave more room to "tuck".

Yup, by us I mean my husband and myself. I did build a first version as a starting point to see if it was something I wanted to go produce. But being a one woman shop and orders stacked up I didn't have much time to R&D. So, the only tuckables that I did were the first two for our carry. I didn't like mine. There's a point where size of the gun, size of the tuckable and size of the person hit a threshold. This was my original observation but was reconfirmed when my husband came back from Astan. Before he was mob'd he wore the tuckable and the MP9c daily. While he was gone he dropped 30lbs. He came back and tried to wear the setup again and it wasn't comfortable for him anymore. Didn't surprise me and I knew exactly why. The same reason it didn't work for me. Needless to say, I built a lot of holster designs, a tuckable included, that never made it to the public. Every holster maker has what's called a holster box. It is filled with "I want to try this" type holsters, first runs, tests, etc. I just emptied mine as I'm shutting down. But I probably had about 60 holsters in there.

I have a Tucker gunleather Secret Strike. It came with a kydex clip that lasted 8 months. No guarantee on the clips, so I had to buy a package of two more for $24 after tax and shipping. If you go to the page below and scroll down near the bottom, you'll see several types of kydex clips, sold in pairs.
IWB Holsters

I'm frankly not impressed with kydex clips that have to flex. Maybe they're weak from being melted and bent, but mine seem fragile, and at 8 months life, the ongoing cost of ownership might get expensive, so I've been looking for steel. Problem is, I don't see long ones like the Tucker: 4.5" from top to bottom, with four holes on 1/2" centers starting 1/2" from the bottom. Still looking, but what I've found so far in steel, both are too short, but I might be able to glue and screw one to the bottom portion of a Tucker unit:

Personally, I've found basically all kydex/polymer clips to be complete crap in some way or another. They either slip off the belt easily, are not durable and break easily, allow the gun to move too much, etc.

Best type of clip I've found so far are the thick spring steel clips out there that are center notched and have a tab that sticks inwards and latches on to anything it can. They are rock solid, and seem to be slightly thicker (not sure on that) than some of the standard metal clips in use by most holster makers (Crossbreed and the others mentioned). Here's a good example of a FIST Inc. holster (Jim uses these clips quite a bit it seems):

Yes, if you look at the Crossbreed clips, you see an embossed cross. This is the new version, as originally that cross was cut out of the clips leaving a weak area where they could (and did in my case) easily deform. The new design is doubtless stronger but would almost certainly be better if not even embossed.

The easier method is to just take a punch or drill and make new holes in your holster to fit the shorter clips. That's what I've done in the past.

For the holsters that only use one clip, I would agree metal is the way to go. For those using two clips, I'm not opposed to kydex so much.
