This will be my first season hunting on the public lands. I'm looking to get a couple white tails this season. Is the Luminant unit 607 any good? I'm also looking at the Sam Houston forest, how is it?

The AHP and hunting licence is all that's required, correct?

If you look at the back of the map books, they publish how many deer were taken on the opening weekend, or at least they used to. You can gauge roughly how decent they are. It is hard hunting public land for sure, stalking works best.

I use to hunt Sam Houston National Forest, west of New Waverly. Killed my first deer there (7 ptr.). Always saw does, but only had a chance at two bucks. My buddy, on the other hand, killed an 8 pointer, 3 years in a row. Of course his wife didn't give him a hrad time about being out there every Saturday.

You go first ..... I spent a weekend deer hunting on public land and barely escaped with my life. No way I'm ever going back.

HA! I didn't say I did it anymore. When I do go anymore, it is later in the season after the opening weekend... And not usually to kill deer so much as walk around with a gun and pretend I am hunting.

Me and my brother in law would hunt the lbj grasslands. We would do everything right. scout, get to your spot early. and then some jackass would come strolling by after sunup making all kinds of noise. Complete waste of time. The problem of public hunting areas is that just any idiot can do . just my 2 cents

    Howdy Alaska, welcome back....

Thanks, its nice to get a little free time.

Is camping allowed on the public lots? I'd hate to drive all the way out there to come back empty handed. The longest i'd stay would be one night.

"Bag limit-2 buck and 2 antlerless. must have at
least one unbranched antler or an inside spread of 13 inches or greater. Limit 1
buck with an inside spread of 13 inches or greater."

These are the restrictions for white-tail. How do i determine the inside spread?

I am surprised that more people don't get dead on public hunting grounds. It's like Vietnam out there. I have been very spoiled to hunt with a good friend for 16 years in Georgia. Until we lost the lease we had 5000 acres with 5 big bodies of water stocked with big mouth. Maybe 15 guys would show up tops and most times less than 10 were ever out there. Protected stands/lanes, cultivated rape mix, always got some kills. Great times.
