Writing for the UK-based Guardian, Henry Porter asserts that it is time for the United Nations to somehow undermine private gun ownership in the United States.

"…what if we no longer thought of this as just a problem for America and, instead, viewed it as an international humanitarian crisis – a quasi civil war, if you like, that calls for outside intervention? … If this perennial slaughter doesn’t qualify for intercession by the UN and all relevant NGOs, it is hard to know what does. "

Mr. Porter doesn’t specify how the United Nations and other non-governmental organizations are supposed to accomplish this task, especially since every UN military operation is made up of 90% U.S. troops and equipment. Who's going to come take our guns? The UK, Netherlands and Belgium? The Texas National Guard could stop that bunch. Actually the contestants in an IPDA match could probably stop them! The other thing Porter seems to have forgotten is that the last time the Brits decided the colonies should be disarmed, they got their butts kicked right out of here! Anyway, here is the article about it, likening guns to slavery.

Hell, they failed the first time but they're welcome to try again. Maybe this time we'll invade their little island and make THEM a colony...

Flock the Brit press and their retards who try to portray socialist opinion as news.

George Orwell understood the Brits well.

Actually, they only failed the first time because they were mostly occupied in Europe and India, and had to figure out how to spread their forces. A vast majority of the colonists just didn't care, and the few that did fight wouldn't have bothered to fight at all without some extensive rallying from patriots. In short, we got very lucky, and we had a few very dedicated people on top of that. Don't be so quick to assume all the cards will fall into place a second time.

While I don't think they have a chance, I'd much rather not see it tested.

This. While not demeaning the fighting spirit of our founders fact is they did get lucky and started this war at the right time. Also weather played a HUGE role in our victory as really we didn't even win too many battles. It was more or less a war of attrition and we won thank god (I have very little doubt he had a huge hand to play).

Good points but we also didn't have 52 million gun owners back then either. Even if only 10% of those are whipped up into patriotic frenzy we'd still have over 5 million members in the militia... a far cry larger than the 200,000 to 250,000 that fought the British.

No, obviously victory is not a foregone conclusion on our side but I'd tend to bet the numbers on this one...

Technically the militia is any able-bodied male 18 to 45, or something like that.

If I read the data correctly, according to census.gov (Age and Sex Composition in the United States: 2011 - People and Households - U.S. Census Bureau) there are roughly 62,349,000 males age 18-45 in the U.S. If we took a representative sample equal to the ratio of gun owners against the population as a whole (roughly 314,000,000 according to Population Clock) we get a value in the neighborhood of 16%. If we applied that 16% to the 18-45 male demographic we get a total of 9,975,840 males of age that own guns. So we take the patriotic 10% of that and we arrive at a final number of 997,584. Nearly four times the number that fought in the Revolutionary War.

My point is that nearly 1 million partisan fighters is a nightmare for any invading force and I guarantee you that a lot of determined women and a small army of crusty, old farts with plenty of fight left in them will swell those ranks not only in number but in experience.

Again, I wouldn't bet too heavily against those odds.

Partisan/guerilla fighters are the most difficult to overcome. We learned that difficult lesson in Vietnam. Count me in as one of those "crusty, old farts" with plenty of fight. I'm at the range on a weekly/monthly basis (depending on my finances for that month) and I have a nice collection of weapons I'm moderately and above familiar and skilled with .... including some, shall we say, rifles with some "distance capabilities" attached. Reach out and touch someone from a distance (500 yards and more).

Yes, the Revolutionary War wasn't really popular with a large part of the colonists. I'd say about a third were involved in the fighting with the rest on the fence or not interested in leaving the "control" of the king.

I say let the limeys try it again. A gun behind every leaf of grass isn't too far off in the number of guns that would be pointed at them this time.....

I would fight for this country. There are more people with guns here than most if not all of the armies in the world. Guerilla fighting would be very hard to fight againist. Let them try.
