which semi-auto pistol caliber is good the the hunting defense, this quesiton may has million answers, but I still like to know what are you using in the Texas.

Not home defense, this quesiton for the hunting defense in TX. maybe NM or CO. so, i guess the biggest target is bear or cougar for the field denfense.

I post in handguns field, so, the shotgun is not the topic here.

    Thank you guys.

No bears in Texas - but there are cougars. And coyotes. And feral hogs...

My usual choice for the "uh-oh, that critter is after me" gun is .45ACP, but I'm fairly confident a 9mm JHP (my second choice) will drop a cougar. It might take the whole magazine to discourage a boar, though.

I have a .45 ACP. That should handle just about any critter, two or four legged, you can come across in TX.

Now, if I was going to purposefully buy a gun for the field rather than just carry my HD gun around, a simple .357 Magnum Revolver would also do the trick. If I really thought I was going to encounter something dangerous though, I'd rather have a 12 gauge or my 30-30 with me.

thank you all, The 45ACP is a good caliber for defense, I didn't see many people mention the 1911 which is almost everyone has it. Why?

I guess a lot of us missed the OP NM or CO comment

Not really, he said "maybe" and since he asked what I would carry and I rarely venture out of state I'm not much inclined to buy something new when something I already have works just fine.

However, FWIW, I would not rely on .45 ACP for bears. Not near enough penetration.
