I had a chance to see "Captain Phillips" at the cheap matinee at noon today. I liked the flick a lot!

Tom Hanks is the Captain working for Maersk. He is ready to ship out on a container ship around the coast of Africa. The flick shows his mundane, routine hour by hour activities from leaving home to preparing the ship for the voyage.

At the same time, the action swings around the world to Somalia where a band of professional pirates is getting screamed at for not capturing more ships and cargo. The boss wants results....or else!

The scenes switch back and forth between the two groups .....seamen and pirates as their actions bring them together for this gut wrenching tale. I liked the way we get to know both sides, their values and see how they work and live in their "Jobs."

Initial contact didn't go well as the ship was able repel the pirates by fake radio contacts and course changes. The pirates have been threatened by their bosses however, and they are motivated to capture the ship. After modifying their boat, the Pirates are ready and the assault begins anew.

The Pirates successfully board the ship and a terrifying occupation begins. Without giving up the story, our pirates attempt to capture the crew as the good guys attempt to disable the ship, stay hidden and stay alive. There are MANY tense moments as the two equally motivated groups play a deadly cat & mouse game on board.

Later, a third entity....The US Navy enters the action and cameras examine the three groups as the drama widens from the perspective of Pirates, Crew and US Navy.

"Captain Phillips" is a tense nail biter that captures perfectly, perspectives of the three equally motivated groups as this life or death struggle continues. This flick will keep you on the edge of your seat almost from start to finish! It made me wonder how men can be so courageous and so cruel in deadly confrontations.

It was difficult to witness cruelty of the pirates but we knew why they were so ruthless. Their bosses on land told them what awaited if they failed.

I LOVED the intimate workings of the ship and crew! I've always loved ships and it was a treat to be on board and on the bridge of a huge ocean going vessel. We are there to see them cast off mooring lines and in operation of the vessel from topside to engine room. I felt like a kid in a candy store! Scenery is beautiful and technology aboard the vessel was amazing!

The down side? This is slightly over two hours of threats, intimidation and violence. Leaving the theater was like leaving a UFC fighting cage. The viewer is spent/ worn out/ exhausted.

I felt the feeling of futility in the Captain and crew being forced to go unarmed into a Piracy situation. Knowing that ONE marksman with ONE rifle could have prevented capture of our vessel was very frustrating! Crew training, and defenses included squirting water on the Pirate vessel and locked gates on board that were defeated by the bad guys in 3 seconds flat. Frustration of the crew was understandable as no weapons were allowed on board. One crewman said, "I didn't sign on for this." You couldn't blame him.

There were no sexual scenes, minimal bad language but plenty of cruelty, violence and threats of murder. This is not an easy movie to sit through.

Recent changes in maritime tactics include picking up armed security forces when vessels get into International waters. Weapons that were forbidden in port could be transferred to each ship and removed before coming into the next port. That's good thinking!

This is a "MUST SEE" movie. My grade is A+! Don't miss this one! It's over two hours long and you will NOT want to leave to get popcorn! It didn't SEEM like two+ hours and I hated to see it end.

My wife and I will hopefully get to see it this weekend. Our schedules are crazy, so we don't always get to watch movies at the theaters. We both want to see this one bad.

A comment about our resident movie critique.. THANKS..

These film reviews have become an enjoyable part of the TGT experience for me.. We all love guns, i'd bet everyone has one one close at hand as you read this..(in my case that old Army Colt in it's new holster) but it's not "all" guns..

One of the things i've come to enjoy about TGT (besides the friendship) is the scope of the posting.. Fact is if you can't find something to read on here, you're hard to please.

Now we have movie reviews.. Good stuff, and really well written.. Roger my hats off to you.. you've brought both "Capt" and "Gravity" alive.. and i'm looking forward to seeing both of them.. i'd nominate you for member of the month, but somebody stole the gold stars..

The actual crew was pretty pissed off by the movie. Seems that the real Capt. Phillips took a LOT of liberties with the story.

TXJack.. i'm sure there were a lot of liberties taken.. come on it's Hollywood.. but never the less it was Phillips out in the boat with an AK pointed at his head..

Gold stars? We have gold stars?

I try not to judge the actors in real life, their politics or truth as compared to fiction. I sit down at the table and consume what is served. If I like it, I'll say that. If not, I'll say that, too. If I had to judge the flick based upon the politics of these Hollywood fools, I'd never go to a movie at all. I lay down $5 and expect to see a story develop before my eyes. I go to be entertained. I pay money (although not much) to BE entertained. They can shove their personal politics or how far they stretched the truth!

You mean the people not named in the title and who were not featured? Lol

Phillips didn't write the movie, but I am sure there the literary license was well used.

I saw the movie Sunday. Even though I knew the end, I was still on the edge of my seat.

I'd like to add in another "thanks for doing the reviews". If we had a like button or gold stars, you'd be on the receiving end of them.

Thanks, guys! I'm glad to be of service and the reviews are apparently filling a need that our group has. I research the movies pretty carefully before I choose one to attend. There are some major TURDS out there posing as entertainment!

I suppose a word of what movies I review might be in order. I read online and watch on TV anything regarding each movie. Naturally, some folks are going to hate a movie and some will love it. When I see the trend going very positive, I go to see that flick for myself. You might say, these reviews are hand picked............"pick of the litter!"

I can't afford to see every movie but common sense says that when a flick is notably and constantly disliked, I don't need to spend my weekly allotment of bucks to verify that.

Chick flicks..........sorry, they may appeal to some, but not to me!

Two coming up will be "Escape Plan" and "Fifth Estate." They look pretty good.
