I've seen these "spec" race Miatas for sale on Craigslist.

What is the good generation to buy?

Which black smoke pouring diesel truck should I buy to pull it to the track? (No, not really)

1st gen was the lightest and most chuckable... They keep adding weight and detracting from the one good thing the Miata has going for it :p

I think all the Miata fans are probably watching some home decorating shows or maybe at work passing out peanuts on the plane.

    Zing!

Ive driven the 2nd and 3rd generations (i think there are only 3). The first gen are too small for me. The newer ones definitely are nicer but more refined and heavier does take away from the fun driving experience.

The mazdaspeed turbo model was very fun.

My wife has a Miata. I don't care for it. Too small, a pain to climb in and out of and just marginally more carrying capacity than a motorcycle. I can see the attraction to one set up for track use though.

As a builder of Camaro/Mustang Challenge road race F-Bodies, I saw numerous examples of other people's "work" that just made you cringe.

The car is the cheapest component in the equation. The investment in time, effort and resources prepping for, travelling to, participating in and returning from eclipses the cost of the car itself.

An investment in a quality built car pays dividends down the road.

    Having said that ...

I would contact either SCCA or NASA. Each have a very robust spec Pinata ... I mean Miata racing series. Spend time with the series first, then find a car. I can't stress enough how important it is in the long run.

    Good luck!

    Here was my last car.

I considered getting one to play with at MSR Houston given my proximity to the track but haven't really looked into it too seriously. I do know that they are selling off some or all of the spec ones they have...I assume to reinvest in some different ones or other vehicles.

I remember the first time I saw George Lopez doing standup. Only joke I can remember: "so, white people like to drive the Miata. You that means "take a whiz" in Spanish, right?"

SM is still around and probably not going anywhere soon.

But the "big boys" are moving to MX5 cup series and rules

If you want to compete seriously with a miata, you want the latest generation, but if you just want a fun car I would get the first gen. Also, if the car is just gonna be a fun track toy, I would also highly recommend the Nissan 240sx, that's just the car I prefer. Either way miatas are a huge amount of fun.

I had an NB. As far as styling I preferred the second generation body style. For factory engine you cannot beat the NC and that 6 speed tranny.
