Hello everyone. Well, it seems this idea is beginning to gain momentum so lets see what happens. I am awaiting my C&R license and some other board members and I were toying with the idea of a group buy on a crate of 20 Mosin Nagant rifles. The basic details are that it costs $2600 plus shipping which works out to $130 a rifle. The crates are shipped from stockpiles in Russia to the importer to us. Basically, these rifles were refurbished, and packed away sometime in the 1970s. They have been sitting there ever since. As I understand it, the rifles will all be M91/30s. The crate could contain some rare Mosins, or some lightly damaged ones. I have never heard of them being in unshootable condition some might just have stock damage. I would recommend doing a through look over and checking headspace before firing any however. Most likely, the crate will be full of the usual M91/30 refurbs.

Personally, I'd like to look over a crate of these rifles at least once in my life, and I'm hoping there will be something interesting to add to my collection. Maybe this sounds appealing to you, or maybe you just want to pull an old ass Russian gun out of a box of cosmoline, clean it and then make it go "boom". I'm kind of into that too. If enough people want to participate we can order one and I can have it delivered to my house. We can figure out a far way of divvying up the rifles. If enough people are interested I'm not against a random one rifle one person deal, but if it's just a few people, I'm not against a pick and choose approach. So how about it? Let's see if anyone is interested.

To get you excited here is a picture of my first M91/30 that I got when I was 19.

    I'm in for one.

Would like two, but can't commit to that many as of today.

I am curious as to what the shipping is going to cost. Can you send them an email Mike and find out? I'm thinking around $300 but I've been out of the freight game for awhile, so it's just a guess.

Yeah, I'll shoot them an email. I'll let you know.

Don't mean to poop on your parade (this full crate buy is a sweet deal), but do you have a C&R license? Buying a crate and then selling them might run afoul of the BAFTE-EIEIO weenies. Especially since you do not plan to keep them for your collection and are "pre-selling" them. Things might be different if you kept them for an inspection period and sold-off the ones that you don't want for your collection. If you do not have a C&R, do you have an FFL that is going to handle this initial transfer for you. There are a lot of potential gotcha's in this deal. Good luck.

I have to agree, I would not risk buying a crate of Mosins then selling most of them off shortly after if using an 03 FFL. Maybe if you only sold one or two off a year, but remember than a C&R is for collecting and if I were the ATF and saw someone buying 20 rifles at one time then selling 17 of them a week later, I would consider that a business and not collecting. Buying 20 rifles then selling one or two a year to make room for others is more along the lines of collecting...

Also remember that once you have your 03 FFL, all eligible firearms must be recorded in and out of your bound book. C&R weapons owned prior to obtaining the 03 FFL are not required to be logged in, but must be logged out if sold after you get your license. And that bound book is subject to examination by the ATF as long as your license is valid.

    Cheers! M2

Yes, the legal issues have been brought up, and I appreciate the input. It would seem that I may have to put this on hold until I can figure out what exactly the standing is.

As I understand it right now, this probably something that I won't be able to do. Reading the C&R license and what it allows in a very technical sense I think it would be allowed. I am basically trying to buy one crate so that I can get one rifle, but I don't think that the activity would be viewed that way. So I guess it is a dream deferred. For now. If anyone has some lawyer friends that can explain it exactly one way or the other I would appreciate it. Otherwise, I guess I can contact BATF and ask?

To be honest, I thought of buying a crate in the past and selling off the rifles I didn't keep; but passed on the idea because the risk was too great if the ATF wanted to press the test. Plus, I can't afford the legal fees or worse, a felony conviction if it all went south!

Yes, very good points and certainly worth considering. I think I am going to send a letter to the BATF and see what they say. One, I'm not ready to give up completely, and two, I'm curious. If they give me a hard "yes you can do that" then we can come back to this idea.

Just FYI I have an FFL. If that helps. PM me if you would like to verify.
