I was looking at some combination 12 gauge / rifle options. This is an over/under type, not barrel swaps. so it would have a smooth bore AND a rifled barrel at the same time.

If you were to cut the weapon down to like 9" barrel lengths, and put a pistol grip on. what would it be called according to the ATF? would it even be legal?

If you register as a manufacturer, that's $1000 per year I think. That's about the only way you can produce an NFA firearm

    Negative... that's what a form1 is for

As for the cut down 12 gauge/rifle, I'm not sure. I'm betting they would make you pay twice for an SBS and an SBR

my curiosity with this come from the X caliber system of rifled inserts. I would have one interesting gun that would shoot
    .22LR, 38s, .357, 9mm, 45acp, 45LC, .410, 12ga, .40, .44mag, 20ga, .223/5.56, 7.62x39, .308

Plus a choice of one of the following if I went for a Sabatti Master:
    9.3x74R • 8x57JRS • 7x65R • 7x57R • 6.5x68R • 6.5x57R • 6.5x55SE • 5.6x57R • 5.6x50R Mag. • 22 Hornet • 30-06 Spring • 270 Win. • 25-06 Rem. • 243 Win. • 22-250 Rem. • 222 Rem. Mag. • 222 Rem.

One gun to shoot them all. (just not as well) granted the cost of a combo gun is expensive just to gain one extra caliber.

Don't take this the wrong way, but if you are not familiar with NFA laws, please don't offer advice in the NFA forum.

A person can build SBR, SBS, silencers themselves on a form 1. I have built 3 SBRs myself.

I have no idea if this would be a SBR, SBS, or AOW.

If it ever had a stock on it you'd have to register it as both a SBR and SBS before cutting the barrels that short.

No different than building a 14.5" barrel M4 clone with a Masterkey or M26 shotgun mounted underneath.

You can only make AOWs from receivers/frames that never had a stock attached.

is it possible to order without the stocks?

If you can get one straight from the manufacturer with no stock.

But the Form 1 making tax is still $200 for an AOW, it's $5 to transfer but $200 to build a brand new one. You may as well just make them SBR and SBS so you have the option of adding a stock later.

    Very interesting question/dilemma, subscribed.

My best guess would be it's an AOW. That is the designation that was given to the M6 Aircrew Survival Weapon by the feds in it's original 14 inch .22 Hornet/.410 configuration.

Might be a good question to send a letter to the BATF to get an answer on.

I like the idea of a combo gun with a rifle barrel and a 12 gauge barrel. Hopefully since the rifle barrel will be an insert, they will only say you need a stamp based on the host gun (shotgun) and you get a fee-less ok on the rifled barrel, or just an AOW stamp.

it's two barrels. o/u config. one is shotgun, one rifle. then there are additional inserts for the shotgun bqarrel.
