For Sale is a good condition 1891. All serial numbers match on stock, bolt, trigger guard, receiver, barrel. Very low serial number C09xx which I believe to indicate the rifle was from the first year of production 1892.

C series was for the carbine model however this does not have the typical front site protectors. Barrel is 23 inches, overall is 43 1/2 inches. Bolt is turned down and appears to have been made that way.

Wood has some dents/dings but is in overall very nice shape. Metal has some rusting but bluing is overall good. Crest has been ground off and there are no importation stampings.

It has been in the hands of one owner since the 80s and is offered for sale to highest offer. Currently I am working between Burnet and Taylor so will not always be handy to the computer. At worst I believe it will be 3 days before I would respond back.

Some interest in trades, single shot shotguns but cash preferred. The rifle belongs to a friend who does not have ( or use ) a computer. 024.jpg 030.jpg 025.jpg

What is the owner asking for the rifle? I see "highest offer" but I would imagine there's a price on this somewhere.

That is a bit of an issue, JohnnyBoyy, At the last gun show I saw 4 or 5 of the rifle versions with significantly higher serial numbers in the 2-4 hundred asking range. Suspect sell prices would have been closer to the 2. Had some discussions with a dealer who seemed to know a bit about them and he was unsure but suspected that this one was a "rare" version of the carbine. However, rare does not equate to valuable in each case. ( for example a rare HiPoint LOL ) As well, I have been unable to find any information that would confirm this. Yes the barrel is shorter than the rifle, yes the bolt is turned and on the rifle it was not and yes the serial number is from the carbine series indicating that it was not a rifle that was later cut down. As well the serial number does fall within the first year of production.

The interest at the gun show by dealers was in the $200 area so I would suspect the value on this to be near to $300 or ?. The owner, when given this information said he would not mind selling it, but again he could just put it back in the safe. Nor would he let me know what he paid. So I was at a loss on putting an exact dollar figure to it. In hind sight I guess I should have put $300 or best offer as I was reminded on the rule about having a price. Because I could always pull it from sale if a flood of " I will take it mark it SOLD" responses came in indicating that it was priced way too low. However, that is not the way I work. I am looking to see what fair market value or the interest price for someone with more information on these interesting rifles.

I do appreciate the one offer, at $100 and will pass it, along with the information I have gathered about the rifle to the owner. Who knows, he may accept or counter. I will respond to any and all offers with a pm once I have spoken to the owner.

A military surplus rifle in the 1980's like that with a $200-300 value today, you can be assured it was not very much. Probably had enough for a couple steak dinners left over from a C-note.

There are several factors besides the serial number and date that would effect this arms price. If it is an example that has been reamed to acc .30-06 it is probably worth between $80-$100 to a collector, maybe more to someone who wants a rifle in that caliber for shooting. If yours still has all the military wood and metal and has matching serial numbers on the bolt and receiver it still could bring around 200-250. If it is the carbine you would be safe asking up to 350. I honestly do not know too much about Mausers, but I hope this helps.

Acera, you are probably right. I believe I paid less than $60 including delivery for my Swedish Mauser in the mid 80s and much more than the value of the gun on 2 or 3 boxes of ammo for it. Also, I remember the cost of steaks back then so a C note should have covered dinner for 2 as well. However, I also made a lot less back then so in actual value/price were it at the 100-150 range now it would have been cheaper now than when I bought it.

Mike, It is original caliber, original wood and all matching serial numbers. I was advised if the crest was intact it would be significantly more expensive ( and when I was told that I was shown where the crest had been ground off. The job was done with much more care and finish than the Jap rifles I have seen missing the mum. ) Again however we are up against a number of things that I am unsure of. SO to appease the sensibilities of one respondent I did indicate a $300 price so that I am within the rules and will see where it goes.

Thanks to all who have added information.

Also, like I said I do not know Mausers so well, but I believe that if yours has a bent bolt it is in fact a carbine. In fact I believe it is a M1891 Engineer Carbine. Take a look at this post. It looks very similar to yours. http://forums.gunboards.com/showthread.php?198649-Mauser-Modelo-Argentino-1891-Identification

I did research as much as I could on the carbines, however they did have, in their reported carbine production models some differences to this one. First, the others have the sling swivel studs in a different location and second the front sight is protected where as this one is without the added side wings. Again, based upon changes during production and with the first year serial number it could have been one of the early models and the changes made later. It does however have the bent bolt and shorter barrel as well as the c prefix serial nr.

Not a large difference but sufficient that I believe the interest in this one will be limited to those who collect mausers and have other variations of the 1891s.

As far as I know only the carbines had a bent bolt, so if they are matching it must be a carbine. There easily could be a rare variant or some refurbishment practice I am not aware of.

Interesting. Now you have me curious.

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you Centex_T/A, Owner decided to keep it. I am closing the thread and returned the rifle to him last week.
