This topic is to show opinions on either a military scope, the Trijicon acog, or a long range scope like a leupold for hog hunting with a 223.

You rarely get distance shots on hogs in daylight hours. you are more likely to be much less than 100 yards so I would say ACOG. OTOH, a .223 is pretty marginal for tough animals like hogs so precise shot placement is preferred to spray and pray. If you are shooting for eyeballs, an ACOG will not be your best bet.

I personally use the only rifle I have right now, a 30-06 with a 7 power fixed power scope. But my rifle has factory iron sights as well so if all I'm doing is hogs I can take the scope off. I don't but I could. I like open sights for pigs. If I still had my 30-30 that is what I would take. With open sights of course.

Don't listen to Mo, use a bazooka if you have one

My son insists we use handguns. I'm still thinking long as we haven't had our first pig out yet.

Ohhhh come on DC you just have to imagine and it takes so little imagination, that the little piggy you have in your sights is Pelosi.
Now would you not rather be up close and personal like when you squeeze the trigger!

And they are mean as the devil himself when cornered by some dogs and all you have is a knife. Don't ask! I'm with D, pass the big gun with the express sights!

Now I am starting to understand , you and DC never had to face down a 30lb raccoon bore that was just wounded.
After that, pigs ain't crap. A pig can't jump in your face and tear it off like a pissed bore coon can.
That's a nigh 4 of use will never forget!

It's called coon hunting not coon wrestling what the hell were you thinking! And no I have not. But I'd still like to have a more than a knife the next time I hunt pigs, and the time that.

We had been spot lighting coons and treed this big male.
My bud took a shot and it fell out of the tree.
The coon laid there and we all though it was dead.
Don went over to pick him up to skin out and just as he bent over this dam thing jumps up and attacks Don.
Next thing we know is the big coon is all over Don and of course Don is going nuts trying to peel this coon off of himself.
Don screams and blood goes everywhere.
This dam thing has bitten through Don's cheek and will not let go.
I grab on hind leg, Paul grabs the other and Mark stabs this coon probably 10 times in the chest with a lock blade knife.
When the coon dies it still had Don's cheek in its teeth.
The next 1 hour was spent getting Don back to the truck and then another hour to the ER.
Don has plastic surgery and has a small scare next to his lower lip.
Anyway after that, a coon was not pronounced dead till it has been shot in the head and brains were exposed.
That's why I don't fear pigs as much as coons - LOL!!!!

I use a .41 or now a .44 Mag but I also carry a AR on my back with a lil Millet Red Dot just in case a long range shot comes along.

Don shot that coon with a Ruger 30 carbine. Just grazed its head apparently.
To this day Don will not coon hunt or hog hunt for that matter.
Per him "I'm huntin from tree top in a blind or not at all"
I have to say, I understand where he is coming from but I still love to hunt coons.

That is a big bullet for a coon to duck. I'll stick to coon hunting with a 20 gauge shotgun. And I don't blame him on the coons but the hogs c'mon man that is the fun stuff.

    Acog or scope

IME, I have to agree, long shots at hogs aren't practical. They move fast through trails, etc. and only stop to eat somethin' if it's there(corn, etc.)True, last season I shot 4 hogs at various distances(35-100 yds) all with my Leupold scoped .280 remington in one sittin' but 30-50 yds is a much more practical range. I would say you are a little under gunned using a 223 for hogs, not that it won't kill them, it just won't do it in one shot every time. And, my setup, should I choose to snipe hogs w/, is an Armalite ar with an eotech dialed in at 50yds. I imagine some 60+ gr hollow points would have to be the ideal choice for hog ammo. Anyway you cut it, if they die in one shot, your doin' somethin right.

A .223 with an ear shot will drop a pig with one shot every time.

+1...Two friends have taken a few hogs (100lbs or less) with a Mini-14 & an AR15. All were ear shots and under 50 yards. They were in heavy woods of course, so I'm not sure how things would have turned out if they had to shoot 100 yards or more with a .223

Works fine also done it with a .22-250 at a lil over 100 and my dad has killed a few doe at over a 100 with a .223 also with a head shot.
