Any one interested in a Dove hunt this September? I'm thinking maybe not opening day, as that's usually a zoo, but the next week end. We can either hunt the public land up by Ray Roberts lake, (need a $45 year long permit) or one of the day leases. The day leases are from $45 - $80, and most about an hour and half to two hour drive.

All you need is a shot gun, hunting license, some camo or drab green shirt and a couple of boxes of shells. Always a lot of fun.

I will be in Alaska from the 3rd to the 10th for my first bear hunt. If it works out I might be able to make the ride up. I have great dove hunting for free down here but would love to come up and put a face to the avatar so to speak.

Sounds good to me. I bought a public lands license last year and went hunting about 15 times for the $48 fee. If I went out to a regular lease, I'd pay that much for one day. I need to get the public lands permit and my regular hunting license, but in a few days, I'll be good to go.
Keep me posted. Season starts on Tuesday, Sept. 1st. Do you want to schedule the trip for the 5th or 12th? I figure the 5th will still be a zoo.
By the way, I'm also a little concerned about sharing a hunting field with someone named Dick Cheney. But then again I'm not a lawyer, so it'd probably be safe.
Oh, if anybody needs the information on the Public Lands License, here it is:TPWD: Walk-in Hunts: Annual Public Hunting Permit
    Happy hunting!

What areas did you hunt? Seems the closest area to DFW is the the Ray Roberts area. I've been to that lake fishing a few times, but I'm not familiar with the land.

There are about 6 or 8 places near Denton and Gainesville that are in the special supplement for dove hunting you get when you buy the Public Hunting Lands license. I misplaced my book from last year, and I haven't bought my license for this year, but I'll go by and get it today or tomorrow and let you know.
I've never hunted at Ray Roberts, either, but I know that on most of the "dove only" sites, it's usually pretty busy on weekends, and opening day is like Grand Central Station. Ray Roberts might be a better choice, since it's a lot bigger, and probably less crowded.
Heck, I don't care where we go. I'm just looking forward to going hunting. I would like to request that nobody else hunts near me. I have found that the laughter of other hunters generated by my missed shots seems to scare away the birds.

Great, let me know when you pick up your book so we can figure out of the public land will work or a day lease. I'm thinking the weekend of 9/7 9/8. Since opening day is on 9/1, which will the first week-end being the labor day week end, that would no doubt be very crowded. I'd rather see less birds, and not have to fight for a spot. Of course that's the advantage of the leased option. They usually limit the number of hunters, and rotate fields to ease up on the pressure.

One of us needs a new calendar. The weekend after Opening Day is the 5th & 6th. The next weekend (when I agree would probably be the better choice) is the 12th and 13th.
I will probably pick up my license tomorrow, and will let you know if there's a more central location.

Hmmm, according to the State web site, opening day is 9/1 (Tuesday) as it always is, and that next week-end, the 5th and 6th is Labor day week end, and would be the first week end after the opening. The next week end after that is the 12th and 13th., so I got that wrong... So it's the 12th or 13th then...

Navy, how far, is too far to drive (for something more along the lines of hunting on private property)?

I stopped by the TPWD office today and they don't start selling the licenses until Aug 15th. So it'll be a week or so before I get the map. But the weekend of the 19th sounds good to me. We can plan to go to one of the public sites (assuming everyone has a public hunting lands license) or if another member has some land we can help eradicate their dove population, we can look at that.
As far as distance goes, I live in north Ft Worth and I'd probably be willing to go 100 miles or so. A couple of years ago, one of my company's vendors took about a dozen of us to a ranch near Hillsboro, and we hunted all afternoon, and only got 3 doves and one rabbit. Mmmm, that rabbit was good!
By the way, here's the link to the map of Ray Roberts showing the public hunting areas.
