I searched and searched on here and couldn't find a relevant thread, so, what's a decent pair of ear-pro? I've got some cheap-ass ones now that are falling apart and they are too high profile. Howard Leight R-01526 looks good. Suggestions?

Howard Leight | Impact Sport Electronic Earmuff

I use these most of the time and I love them. You probably noticed that was what the majority of us were wearing at Hicksville. They do a good job at protecting your hearing while still allowing you to talk to people and stay aware of your surroundings.

I'm thinking I might try the Surefire Sonic Defenders sometime soon though for work since I have to wear them with a hard hat. I'll probably stick with my Impact Sports for the range though.

Those are what i would buy if i were to get electronics. I almost picked up a pair last week but since i rarely use hearing protection except whats issued to me as required i decided to wait. I just recently had to take my annual auditory test so we will see how it pans out and if ill need better protection and to wear them more.

I will say after adding muzzlebrakes to my rifles recently, i definately think about wearing earpro more. The 308 isnt a problem its the 556 that makes my left ear ring.

I also dont want to be on a hearing profile, because i would like to pass board as im up for promotion again.

Yeah I did see. Thanks for the info. Wasn't sure exactly what model it was though. I've blasted too many dove and quail over the years and don't need any more hearing loss.

The peltor shotgunner are my favorite non-electronic (I've been through a few lol). But those ones linked are probably the best electronic ones out there for your avg shooter.

Good deal. Passing a $50 pair of ear-protection is way easier than an $1000+ 1911 to wifey-mate. lol. Appreciate the help guys.

I got Howard lieght electronic and love them. Huge difference between them and the cheapo Winchester electronic I got at Wally World.

I also like that you can plug your phone or MP3 player in. Really helps me slow down when shooting groups.

Also takes less batteries and the batteries last longer than in the cheapos.

I wear Howard Lieght electronic muffs over Howard Lieght Max earplugs. Yes, plugs and muffs. Both. I can still hear conversations and things around me, but the shots do not bother me. My wife and I used to use the standard "gun store" ear plugs but my Desert Eagle ruined her high frequency hearing in her left ear. We both decided to take hearing protection serious and stop being "macho" (ignorant).

I had a pair of $300 electronic muffs that had one side go out after only a year and the other side go out a year or so later. I also used to double plug, put ear plugs underneath the muffs, when I shot comped rifles but I found a set of custom fitted earplugs to be even better. I get less of a headache after shooting the comped rifles with the custom fitted plugs over the muffs/plugs. Also the fitted plugs are more comfortable and not as hot during the summer. You can get electronic versions too which are great but can get very expensive. Shooting Ear Protection | Digital Hearing Protection

I use these: MSA Sordin Supreme Pro-X neckband hearing protection headset

They're comfortable (The gel earmuff seals are mandatory.) and have been durable for me. I'm hard on gear and these have given me no trouble after more than two years of heavy use. In fact, the batteries finally died at Hicksville, so I can now report that battery life is stellar.

The neckband version I linked is what I use because it's more adjustable and fits better if your head is a bit too big for the standard model. My sis uses the standard model with the headband and loves hers, too.

Some random notes on hearing protection -

    • I generally just shoot pistols so the bulk of the muffs doesn't matter to me. I haven't found any muffs thin enough to make me happy when shooting rifles.
    • I only use the electronic ones because my hearing is lousy and I need them as a hearing aid when they're not muffling gunshots.
    • For many years, I used a nice set of Peltors (the really huge, bulky ones, like these: 3M Peltor Ultimate 10 Hearing Protector - Amazon.com ) plus plugs. I think that combo provided the best attenuation of anything I've ever tried. Unfortunately, that combo also made me so deaf I couldn't hear range commands so it was impractical at many venues. My point is that it's possible to get great protection for under $30. I pay more just for the convenience of not having to take off the muffs and pull out a plug every time I see someone facing me with their lips moving.

At Hicksville last Saturday, I actually saw something I haven't seen in a decade. There was a guy there teaching some woman to shoot a pistol and he had stuffed two cartridge cases in his ears for protection. Ignorance is, apparently, a durable good.

Robert I bought 2 pair of Howard Leight impacts about a year ago and after using them I threw all my other ear pros in a bag in the back of the closet. I bought mine through amazon because I have prime with free 2 shipping.

Never bought anything from this company but that is a really low price not sure about shipping though.

Thanks for the link, I was wondering about a pair as well but wasn't crazy about some prices I seen on other muffs out there. It's also a plus that so many of you seem to use them with excellent results.
