Texas drivers get asked for saliva, blood at police roadblock[/h]
    By Scott Gordon, NBCDFW.com
Some drivers along a busy Fort Worth street on Friday were stopped at police roadblock and directed into a parking lot, where they were asked by federal contractors for samples of their breath, saliva and even blood.
It was part of a government research study aimed at determining the number of drunken or drug-impaired drivers.
"It just doesn't seem right that you can be forced off the road when you're not doing anything wrong," said Kim Cope, who said she was on her lunch break when she was forced to pull over at the roadblock on Beach Street in North Fort Worth.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which is spending $7.9 million on the survey over three years, said participation was "100 percent voluntary" and anonymous.

Title is misleading. Article says FWPD and NRHPD were ot involved. Wonder who blocked the street?

Not quite. Only says Haltom wasn't involved. Ft Worth appears to have provided assistance.

Fort Worth police earlier said they could not immediately find any record of officer involvement but police spokesman Sgt. Kelly Peel said Tuesday that the department's Traffic Division coordinated with the NHTSA on the use of off-duty officers after the agency asked for help with the survey.

"We are reviewing the actions of all police personnel involved to ensure that FWPD policies and procedures were followed," he said. "We apologize if any of our drivers and citizens were offended or inconvenienced by the NHTSA National Roadside Survey."

I've wondered how legal it is to hire cops to block traffic for you. I see them do it at churches and stuff every sunday.

I guess to that point it's not unreasonable for them to work to keep traffic flowing well. But when they're using implied authority to stop you for private interrogation, I think it's well past some line.

This story reminds me of something the drug enforcement task force was doing in Chambers County. I witnessed this myself, incidentally!

They posted a large sign on I-10.
"WARNING! FEDERAL DRUG ENFORCEMENT CHECKPOINT JUST AHEAD. BE PREPARED TO STOP FOR SEARCH!"

They posted the sign about 1/4 before an exit. Where was the drug enforcement traffic stop and search? It was positioned where cars rolled off onto the exit to avoid the drug check point!

Dumb, huh? The crooks fell for it, though!

I would have refused to comply with the saliva/blood request but that may have been a setup to snare impaired drivers. Consent to the sample and you skate. Refuse and you get a breath test.

No thanks. I'll take my chances with my Constitutional rights.

ETA: This where a nice phone/camera set up on video syncing files automatically would come in very handy. Video the "contact" (lol) to then have undisputed evidence. Only way to save your bacon in the police state.

This story has been updated. Fort Worth off duty cops were used by the NHTSA. That is starting to be a weird distinction when you local "off duty" police being used for a national purpose.

I have been looking at the Qik app as well as Dropbox. I have been looking for a way to have continuous video with a loop but most of it seems very expensive.
