C6 is a good tranny, that was the work horse tranny for Ford for years. I had them in a couple old Ford cars and trucks years ago and never had a problem, friend had one in his cougar with the 429 Cobrajet. The C4 was used in the small block cars and the C6 was used in the bigger block cars and in trucks to hold up to the towing and horsepower. I would love to have an old style Ford truck, especially one that is 4x4 and extended cab, you didn't see many around in those days and their even harder to find now...that would be a good restore...

Tell ya a li'l secret....take that 351m, drop in a RV cam (your auto parts house will know what yer lookin' for) an' a high-flow carb, an' you'll have an engine that'll put 'bout anything you got the guts ta put behind it! Did that on my '79 F250 SC, an' pulled a 36' gooseneck all over the east coast deliverin' Longhorns to folks with more money than sense!

Is this for a ranch truck or a daily driver? If you have to drive from Georgetown to Austin everyday like me you would want better mileage out of a vehicle. If your just tooling around Georgetown or Round Rock it is a good idea if it runs as good as he says it does.

The 351M and C6 are Old School main stay of the Ford work truck
Bullet proof and if broke, easy and cheap to fix.
Yes a good RV cam and a reall Holley carb not a Motorcraft and you have a winner.
The 351M set up right is as stout as a 454 in stock trim.

Similar in application, but much better, IMO.

I love rebuilding the C6. It's so easy. The only hard part is stacking all the drums before you put them in the case, and getting them in the case without having one pop out of a clutch. But once you get the hang of it, it's gravy, probably the easiest transmission I've ever learned to rebuild. Heck, even my brother the builder can rebuild a C6.

351M is a good engine. C6 is IMO a phenomenal transmission.

    Well I passed on it.

    For simple reasons.

1st even though its a rebuilt engine, the odometer is showing a very inaccurate reading.

2nd If im going to pay $1.5k I want to be able to drive the truck back to my house. The truck doesnt have the registration sticker nor inspection sticker. Which makes me wonder if this truck is even his. Why not at least have a registration sticker?

3rd it has some minor oil leaks and the shifter lever is broken and vice grips are locked in place.

To me this truck is only worth $750

After reading that... I guess I don't blame you for passing.

    BUT

An odometer on a 1979 model vehicle is without worth... period.

Up to date registration on a $1500 vehicle? Not likely.

The shifter would indicate somebody owning the vehicle that didn't FIX anything that went wrong... I agree it would be a point of negotiotion on the price.

My estimated worth: $1000.00 If the engine ran good and the truck drove fairly well.

Wouldn't even be worth THAT much to me - all the "patches" suggest to me that only what *had* to be done had been done to this truck - includin' the "overhauled" engine. When I put my '79 up for sale, the old boy that bought it about soiled hisself when I fired it off for him. Stood outside the truck w/a cold engine, in nuetral - hit the key, engine immediately fired off. That engine sat there rumblin' through the headers an' shorty pipes, ready to do the job. There was NO doubt in his mind that the truck, while an old one, had been done *right* mechanically.........

If anyone sees or owns a old Dodge, old Ford, old GM 4x4 250 diesel or big block v8 thats in running and driving condition. Let me know. Old meaning 60's 70's early 80's for gas engines, 89' to 93' on the dodge diesels. Im still on the hunt.

The 351M sucks compared to the (same block) 400M or the 460.
    The 460 drops in using L&L mounts - I did it on a 77.5 F-250 (same frame).
That is not a 'high boy' or 'tall boy', those terms mean the 77.0 and older.
SC, might have a Dana 60 front - but likely a Dana 44, will have a Dana 60 rear.
    Probably 4.10 axle gearing.
SC, so look for rust along the drip rails, it's usually like cheese cloth.
My 77.5 got 15 MPG highway after a mildly cammed 460 if I kept it under 70 MPH.
C6 accepts the wide-ratio E4OD 1-2 4-sun planetaries as a drop in, giving greatly increased capacity and off the line power.
I know entirely too much about 70s F-trucks, I used to scrap at least 1 annually to keep my 'fleet' going.
ETA: I sold a running but non-driving (blown tranny) '78 F-250 Camper Special (HD) 4X4 for $800 in 1993. $1500 was a bit high, but $1,000 is reasonable if it runs and drives.

I had one in my 1977 F-150 DWB 4WD pickup. I had the C6 tranny in it. It would climb a tree I think. The 351M( M=modified Clevland) Is a Cleavland engine with the Windsor crank and rods just to name a few components that was used in it. My truck was fast as trucks go. As stated above a good RV cam, 4 bbl Holley carb and dual exhaust of at least 2 1/4" will get that beast up and running. They are still using an aluminum version of that block in drag and NASCAR.

Probably a good pass up, for the price should have been licensed and inspected, makes you wonder why it was sitting like that ? Keep looking, you'll find a good
    'un sooner or later.

The 351 Mutant (cleavland block windsor heads) was a great engine, so was the c6 tranny.

I would be concerned about the transfer case and differentials.

Its worth a grand, if it was not so far away I would consider it.
And a trip permit for the truck is only $25 each way

Does it have to be 4x4? A friend is selling this 1979 c rew cab truck, runs good, pretty clean for original. He is looking to get $6,000, I think:

I was thinking the same thing, but that's what he told me, so that's what I passed on. I bet he'd take half that.

And I think it's under 100k miles, original too. Not sure about that though.
