As most of you know we just had our roof done last week. Well the fascia hasn't been replaced since there was a mixup in the ordering. That was to be coming this week.

So I'm puttering around the house yesterday morning. It's what I do as I work from home. I had set some items outside to dry and I approach the sliding door to go retrieve them and I am scared out of skin as I see this guy standing under the tree in my back yard staring at the house and talking on his cell phone  I go from zero to ten in no seconds flat. The hair on my neck stood up, I got hot as the fight or flight response shocked my system. I was just about to tear up stairs (I'm still in pajamas) to get my .45 when the guy sees me. He sees that I'm shocked to heck and waves and sheepishly laughs and starts to walk over to the deck. I still have the door closed and locked and he says hello through the door and explaining the was the guy who was suppose to be doing the fascia and he talked to my husband yadda yadda yadda. I've still got the door closed and I give him some courtesy but I don't trust him. (Yes, that could be a mistake and I'm not happy I did so).

He apologized for scaring me and I told him to knock next time or things would get messy really fast. He said he'd be coming back later that day to install the fascia so I asked if it had been delivered.

"No, not yet, but I just talked to your husband..."

Uhuh, I think to myself. Then he has no reason to be coming back and he'll get a surprise if he or anyone else shows up like that again.

He leaves, I run upstairs to the bedroom window and watch. He parked right behind my truck. I called DH asked if he talked to any guys about the fascia.

"No sweetie, last time I talked to anyone it was Brian and that was last week".

I told him what had happened and he called Brian to let him know. I then got dressed and put my .45 on. Fool me once, shame on me. Fool me twice...

Me on the other hand still doesn't believe that guy. I KNEW when he said it, that he hadn't talked to DH, so my BS meter pegged and he was done. What did surprise me was that he knew about a couple specific items on the roof that were done that unless he was here working on the house, he wouldn't have known about. I was pissed that he did not come knock on the door. He parked right up on my truck, kind of hard to miss that someone might be home.

Well, goes to show, again, in your own house you can't let your guard down. We live at the end of a culdesac. The guy drove up, walked through the front yard to side of the house to the one and only gate, past another window and I didn't see until I walked to the patio door. I was ticked as I normally open the blinds and I would have seen it. I was miffed that my dog didn't notice a thing either. After I saw the guy and he aproached the house and came into view at a window did the dog growl.

Guess it bothered me more than I thought because all night I had dreams of watching people sneak through my dream yard and climb up into my windows. Serveral got in and I caught one at gun point

DH worries about the roof blowing off during storms. I worry about defending the fort.

I guess you need to make a holster to work with your PJ's ;)

That would be a problem for me, as my summer time sleeping attire is, shall I say, a bit on the skimpy side.

    Glad it worked out okay.

I guess your side gate isn't locked at night? I've had to keep my side gate locked ever since our dog got out when our fences were blown down by Hurricane IKE. Looks like you'll have to get your .45, first thing in the morning.
It would have been interesting to see the guys face if you did have your .45 on you at the time.

Shorts just shoot one of the guys and soon words out that the lady in the center house don't take shit and don't come unannounced.
I'm not saying kill anyone just nick-em a bit.
In all seriousness there is no excuse for a trades person not to identify themselves before entering the back yard.
I have ran a couple of cable guys out of mine at gun point.
I had no idea who they were standing in my back yard with a phone looking up in the sky.
They get real nice as they back out saying 'Be cool- be cool" and then show some ID.
Both times were safety supervisors verifying unsafe working condition caused by storms. Just guys in khaki pants , dress shirt and a phone.

Nope, no lock. I've got an extra one upstairs though that I believe I'm going to stick one there now. I've got an iron fence on the gate side and a privacy on the other side. If anyone wants to get in the back yard they come knock or jump over. One way is the right way, the other, not.

I bet the guy would have run if he saw a gun on the hip lol

We replaced our roof a few years ago. The guys came back to trim out a sky light. I stupidly asked how long it would be cause we were on the way out. The Wife said WTF?!? So, I double secured the house before we left.

We came home to pry marks to both patio doors, and all windows, in the back of the house.

I installed cable tv one summer. We used to hop fences to get to pedestals & poles, (service points) and messengers (wire rope). We were paid by the install, so driving around the neighborhood looking for permission was a no-go.

I never had any run-ins or interesting stories.

I had this in my mind the entire this this roof was getting done. I'm not sure if you posted this before or if I heard someone elses horror story but it was in the back of my mind. I left about 45min before the guys were done but I had my neighbor, Brian keep and eye out as they did his roof the same day.

I'm not thrilled with having service people, or anyone who's not a friend come to my house. You don't know who they are or how much they tell their friends.

We get a fair shair of USPS, UPS, FedEx packages here, so that's always a concern. Along with the regular summertime bored with nothing to do no-goodniks, people putting flyers on your door, and who knows who watching the delivery guys dropping stuff off.

If they have tool belts on and hard hats I don't worry as much but these guys as I said did not look the part of a real working man so I was not going to just sit by and hope nothing was amiss.
If you look like you belong where you are at, doing what you look like you should be doing, I just keep a weather eye out.
If you look out of place, well then we are gonna have a little talk.

After the Direct TV guys did my install yesterday I double checked my windows to make sure they were still locked. One of the guys said I was one of the few who followed them into every room and watched what they were doing, he was very aware of my presence and my purpose. I trust absolutely no one who comes to do work on my house.

When I lived in an aparment in Corpus I use to come home to lights on that I could have sowrn I turned off, woke up once to lights on that I swore I turned off. Asked management and they said no one was in my apt. about a week later I woke up to a noise, i instinctively knew it was bad, turned the corner from my bedroom, gun in hand, to see a man reaching down behind my TV. I sat with my gun to the back of his head til the police arrived. He was the apt complex maintenance guy and he went to jail.

At my mom's property I showed up to mow the grass only to find a man walking from a brushy area that was fairly secluded towards my mom's house, he was dressed in jeans and a t-shirt, no logos. He was looking around like he was scoping the place out. I called out to him to see who he was and he kept walking. I called out again and he looked at me and continued. I drew my gun and yelled stop or I'll shoot. His eyes widened as he saw the gun in my hand, he said I'm with AEP working on some power lines. He waited comfrotably in the hot sun at gun point til the deputies arrived.

The Deputies were OK with you drawing on somebody for that reason?
I only ask because I have wondered about scenarios such as you mention.

When I was working nights as an unarmed security guard at ... we'll just say a well known high priority waste of time and tax payer money. I would sleep during the day. I worked side by side with law enforcement officers all night long and you don't want to be the rent-a-cop that falls asleep on that post. Anyway, The duplex I was living in was being sold and there were inspectors and repair men, potential buyers coming to my house all the time. I told the land lord and the realtor that I sleep during the day and work at night so schedule the arrival times with me so I could be awake when they got here. She (the realtor wanted to let people in the house when I was not there or asleep. I told her no and she hung a lock box on my garage door. I Woke up one morning (around noon) to the sound of unfamiliar voices in my kitchen. I grabbed my .40 and put some shorts on, and tacticool my way to the kitchen. I came around the corner to find two guys standing in the kitchen and they had what I pronounced as an order "do not move and keep your hands in the air" Simple right! Well after they told me that the realtor had told them no one was home and to come on in. I called her and said that I would inform her as soon as one of her workers got shot because of her attitude and mouth. I never had another problem with that lady. I trust no one!

DC you a shifty looking sort anyway. Ya know, squenty eyes, dark skin, old clothing, (hides new sidearm) hair a mess. We understand why - LOL!!!

The last straw for me was a woman locked me in hour house for 4 hours on a Friday night. She had just moved in, had nothing but paint on the walls, and said she needed to leave for 10-15 minutes.

I had to go back on Saturday. When it was time to pay, she said ... how much do I owe you? I know SWBT (now AT&T) said they'd do the job for $65. I thought, WTF?!? I said, lady, that $65 for the first 15 minutes. This was an 8 hour job.

She said, I'll pay you $75 and never use you again.

I thought, damn right you'l never USE me again. I took the check, didn't complain to my friend that "hooked me up" since he was an AT&T phone system salesman, and was usually good for a steady stream of "side" work.

BTW, this lady lived in The River Oaks. I did the main house (all floors), guest house, and pool house.

No wonder. Did you know, they don't have a sewer system in River Oaks? No.....that's because they don't think their sh!t stinks.

None what-so-ever (that is no prob with me drawing)

First reason that prob helped me is I knew every deputy back then ( I work in the County), the deputies told him he was lucky he didn't get shot as most people wouldn't give a second warning

And since he refused to identify himself or even heed to being yelled at on my mom's property, which is fenced (guess could have added that earlier) and he continued on his merry trespassing way, he had no visible ID on him, no AEP shirt, ID was left in his truck as the deputies found out, said he took shirt off cuz he was hot.
