Stolen Rifles

Had an offense here, Burglary of a Motor Vehicle, where four (4) rifles were taken outside of a local restruant.

1. FN SCAR .223 caliber S/N LC13015 with NSN 01 ACOG Scope
2. Colt/Walther/Umarex 22 caliber S/N BP015919
3. American Tactical Imports (GSG5) 22 caliber S/N A292381
4. Rock River AR-15 .223 caliber S/N to be added later. Had TA31 AOG Scope.

Interesting, that most thefts reports of firearms on TGT involve burglary of a Motor Vehicle in restaurant parking lots.

Time of Day?

Did it happen after a trip to the range or a hunt?

How were the rifles secured in the vehicle?

Since this is a recurring theme, I tend to think the crooks scoped out the victim beforehand and followed him, then hit when he was otherwise occupied.

Folks ... don't think it can't happen to you.

I don't believe in random acts of thievery or violence -- there was animus involved.

I second that. And things can be worse.

My sister looked at the wares of a pushy guy who approached her in a parking lot with gold jewelry to sell. She left but not before he got close enough to see she had lots of jewelry and cash on her. (Yes, "situational awareness" has been a repeated topic of conversation since then.)

Sure enough, when she pulled into the driveway and opened her door, a car slid to a stop right behind her, the perp jumped out and identified himself as a policeman, then grabbed her purse and sped off.

It may sound paranoid to circle the block before pulling into your driveway but I will freely admit I've done just that.

Not to me, one of our citizen's. Guns were not in plain view. The victim had been shooting on his property and according to him, there was no one around.

I've been seeing reports from the Houston and San Antonio area where it looks like the bad guys may be keeping surveillance on folks leaving the shooting range and hitting them when they stop to eat.

One report I have seen advises the bad guys will mark a tire while at the range and follow up later. I have no idea if this true or not but you might want to inspect your vehicles after a range session.

The tire marking has been debunked. From the pics on the emails I've seen they reference a small green or red dot on the sidewall. These are put there when they're made and reference the heavy spot for aid in balancing.

I've attended several publicly advertised "shoots" over the years. In every case, there were people who showed up to watch, but did not participate. They just hung around, and all had a cell phone. So picture this: At the end of the shoot they take pictures of guns being put into trucks and cars. Send those pictures to associates. Follow the vehicles, update associates, and ... you have a parked vehicle ripe for theft of guns.

Since everyone else is taking pictures, the odd guy out doing the same does not attract any attention.

Any gumshoe could figure this out.

To take that even further, all a person would really need to do is get the license plates of those cars. Doesn't take a lot of work after that.

Using a smart phone anyone can take a pic, use publicdata.com, run the plates, and then know where you live and what your name is. Same goes for stealing your ID and credit. They take a pic of your credit car and do the same. Once they have your CC number and mailing address they use your credit.
