    Wait!

That's not how you check the oil level? It works on my lawn mower.

Thats the funniest thing I have ever read.... But I shouldnt be mean, I have had a boo boo while working on a Corvette Z06. Now the Z06 is a dry sump car and while working on it I just wanted to check the oil, so I pulled the dipstick on the reservoir, and it was reading low, so I added a quart of oil......

Well time to start the engine, luckily I had the hood open and then... POP!!! Dipstick goes flying and a fountain of oil.... Moral of the story... Gotta warm up the engine before working on a car with a dry sump oil system.

My LS3 G8 holds 9 quarts, and my air cooled Porsche 911 held 13 quarts... (as measured at the dipstick)
There are some engines that do use a huge a mount of oil. Always check your owners manual, or start an oil change thread...

There's a dipstick for a reason, but even then it doesn't mean it'll be used. I once saw a guy service a brand new transmission that should take something like 12 quarts of fluid with 13 gallons. There wasn't a bit of air left in the gearbox, but at least it got caught before the transmission was ran. Point is, even professionals can mess up, but if it doesn't feel right, then it's time to ask the question.

I'll never question a mod or admin again. You know, the "don't give bad information, even jokingly because someone might not know the difference" thing?

When I was teaching at the high school, I had a 1969 ford van that was my beach rig. I had a bed in it, TV and it was rigged great! The engine was a 302 small block with automatic. That dipstick was held in place with a single bolt which for some reason was missing. I asked one of my Auto guys.....OK not the brightest bulb in the package......to check the oil in my van. When he pulled the dipstick out, it also pulled the tube for the dipstick which was then NOT installed in the engine.

He kept checking the oil and couldn't get a reading on the stick so he kept adding oil. Still, he got no oil on the dipstick! When I returned a while later, he had 11 quarts of oil in that engine! We investigated and found that the dipstick was hanging out in the air!

    This stuff happens!

I use to work at an oil change station when I was a teen. Sometimes people would come in with their own oil and have 3 or 4, 5 quart jugs. I would tell them that their vehicle only requires 4-7 or more for Diesels, or which ever depending on the vehicle. They would then argue with me about how I was wrong and that their civic (example) would hold 12-18 quarts.
A lot of people really have no idea how much goes in. Its even funnier when people complain about how their TPMS lights won't shut off and they have to keep adding air in their tires. I would go check them and they would be running 80-100 pounds of pressure in car tires. When I got them back down to 30-35 their lights would turn off. Then they would ask how much more I had to add.

People have no clue how these things work other than turning a key and putting it drive

Those are jokes along the lines of the old Geko45 thing.

I guarantee you that if you fill your engine all the way to the top with oil, it will leak oil before you start it.

I've never had someone tell me their car took way more oil than it does, but I have heard Euro car drivers cry and whine about $120 oil changes (yeah, it takes 7-8 quarts of synthetic, ya bonehead).

Have seen the tire pressure thing before, pretty common for the cop cars I work on to come in with 50psi in a couple of the tires... I'm imagining they add air any time they notice that the tire "looks squishy" and keep adding until it's round again.

I used to be a mechanic, 4 wheel and motorcycle. You would be surprised at what people would do to a poor defenseless vehicle. And not just the motor......
