    Hey, y'all

I'm looking for a place to shoot in the San Antonio area. I live in Boerne so I'd rather not have to drive across town (SA). My wife and I just got back from Bass Pro Shop at The Rim. It is a great place to shoot solo but I was dismayed to find out that my $10 (per shooter) was for only 1/2 hour not a full hour. After shooting for a half hour they kicked us out. I didn't even get to shoot my 1911! Can anyone recommend a good range on the NW side of SA?

    Thanks, y'all!

The only ones on that side of town that I know of are an indoor range on Bandera Rd. Texas Thunder I think is the name. Prices look awful high for non members. (25 bucks plus target and ammo, don't know if you have to buy their ammo or what.) The other option is the Bullethole on Grosenbacher lane off Hwy 90 outside loop 1604. Haven't been there in a couple years, but the prices were much lower than that. The only expensive part there was the private bay, for rapid fire / full-auto. I think it was still cheaper than Texas Thunder's prices. That's a shame about Bass Pro charging 10 per half hour. There's another range on the SW side, Blackhawk I think, but I've never been there.

at Bass Pro you can get year membership for 100 bucks, but you can't shoot reloads. Which is why I don't like them.

If you go on a slow day, they don't care.

Thanks for the info. I'll take a look at Bullet Hole. Weekday shooting works for me so maybe I won't have to face any crowds.

    You guys are the best!

you have to buy and use their own ammo, and it ain't cheap.

Come on over hwy. 46 to Bulverde. Come one exit south on 281 to 1863. Head east a couple of miles to Cedar Ridge Range. $10 per shooter for as long as you like!

I've been to the Bullet Hole a few times. It's ok. Can be a little crowded at times on the weekends.

Not to mention that you will feel outgunned. . . : P

Went there once. Saw a bunch of cool stuff. Some modified guns that. . . . well lets just say the lady down the road was complaining about bullets falling near her house.

I go to Bracken range, which is 7 bucks for one gun and one set of targets. But it is on the other side of town.

    Thanks again, guys!

I looked at Bullet Hole's website. I think you're right about feeling outgunned. I noticed that they have automatic weapons for rent! Might make me feel puny! I never did see a price to shoot at the range, was going to call them on Monday.

I am familiar with Bulverde since my wife is from there. I'll have to take a look at Cedar Ridge. The price is definitely right and it looks like it might be closer than Bullet Hole.

I guess Texas Thunder is definitely out of the running. It sounds like I can get ammo cheaper than they want! I'm okay with shooting alone but it's always better with a buddy. My wife needs a lot more trigger time to get really comfortable with shooting and I don't think she'd be up for an hour drive to Bracken and back.

    Thanks for the input, y'all!

Bullet Hole is not expensive if you go on the regular range - I think it's like $8 per day, and you can stay as long as you like. You can check out on the pistol or rifle range, and then come in and change. The private bay area is $10 per person for 2 hours. Nice thing about the private bay - shoot what you brought - pistol, shotgun, rifle - all without going back to the front area.

Two things I don't like about Bullet Hole -
    1) The ranges face each other in some areas. Even with the high berms, it still makes me nervous. I have been on one range and heard a bullet zing by overhead somewhere. It probably was way above my head, but still - any bullet anywhere above my head is un-nerving.
    2) You get bitched at if you pick up your own brass - even if it is your own. "We sell that" is what the lady snapped at a friend of mine. He replied "No, you don't. It's my brass. I reload it. I'm only picking up brass that I have marked as my own (red marker on the entire base)." She still gave him grief about it. I think that is the last time he went there (and I'm not sure if it was his choice or not). I think it's even posted there - they don't want you picking up your own brass. If you are a reloader... that sucks.

You might want to check out Camp Bullis if you are a DOD card holder. They are off of 1604, as you are coming south on 1604, they are two exits before you get to I-10. Take military and come all the way to the gate. Just ask at the gate and they will direct you to the Game Check Station.

    All the best,
    Glenn

Dietz Range is pretty cool - annual memberships available, and generally a good class of shooter - polite, respectful and not a lot of Mall Ninja's - they escort them outta there if they show up. As of Jan. 1, you WILL be required to be an NRA member to shoot there. As a Life Member, that's fine with me!<G>

I've never been there. how much is it? Both anually and per trip?

I'm mostly looking at pistol ranges. Bracken is a bit of a drive for me.

IIRC, annual dues are like $70-80. Day is $10/shooter, extra targets are mebbe a buck - not sure, because as an annual member, they're like 25 cents each, or I can bring my own (they may allow day shooters the same, just not sure).

Right by the CC Sheriff's complex on 46.

    CC stands for Comal County?

I will definitely check out Camp Bullis, it's closer than any others that have been suggested!

    CC = Comal County, yes.

Bullet Hole - was a Charter Lifetime member. Haven't been there in over 10 years, and don't intend to return. Tossed my membership card a Vern one day when he allowed some REALLY goofy stuff to keep happening.

I live down in south Sa there a Shop / Range Called "A Place to Shoot" on 381 which charges 10.00 per head and you can shoot as long as you have ammo.

I second the Camp Bullis range, I have left a ton of lead there. I bought a house that is only 5 miles from Cedar Ridge Range. I like it and they practice good safety. It is a long drive from Boerne though.
