I have an older 1-ton, a 1996 F350 that I've kept liability on for a lil over a year now, just bought an '05 Expedition on notes. Exp required full coverage so I figured to drop the ins on the F350 and park it, maybe sell later on.

F350 was $65mo for simple liability, added the Exp and the new total was $138mo. I asked about dropping theF350 and they said the Exp would be higher by itself, said it ate up my 2-vehicle discount. Full coverage for the Exp by itself would be $145mo so I kept the F350 on the books (total of 138mo).

Any suggestions? Do these numbers make sense? I mentioned this to a friend a coupla years older than me (I'm 57) and he says he pays $600 every 12mos for liability on his PT Cruiser.

The cost of premiums is not just based upon one's driving record, but the cost of repairs.

In many cases, autos of early to mid 2Ks fall victim to the economic downturn. Many of the big 3 suppliers went out of business. So in many cases, parts are hard to come by.

You can save a lot of money by cranking up the deductibles. I run $1000 deductibles on all my vehicles. Take the premium difference, stash it away and in no time you'll have the $1000 deductible.

Dusty, you look 20 in your avatar & you have 2 daughters 16 & up?

Ha! I wish. Try 41, and I have a 20 year old step daughter, 18 year old twins( one boy and a girl), a 16year old step daughter and my daughter who is 19.

So.....there you have it. Luckily the two teins are on their dads policy and I have the 16 year old and my 19 year old on ours. Jacked it up 340.00 a month. I about had a stroke.

The fact that the truck is a 1ton usually amkes it a bit higher. But the $65 a mnth is still abit much for just liability. The $145 is not bad but could be better. How is your driving record? Is it just basic Comp and Col or did they add rental and towing or any extras?

The good folks at Watkins Insurance Agency have shopped for me three times since our arrival in '08. They look for the best combo of Homeowner's and Auto coverage(almost always cheaper combined) and present two or three alternatives to get the best rates and coverages. We are paying $1300/year to fully cover two 2013 vehicles worth 85 grand...lower deductibles and higher limits, just in case. DW has one accident last year, otherwise we're clean for many years(almost 30 since my last ticket ;) ). Watkins is an independent agency based in Texas and can do the shopping for you. Good luck!

Well, I always figured you seemed awful wise for a twenty yr. old after reading your posts, lol....

Lol, thanks man. I was lucky enough to have my grandfathers and great grandfathers around until I was in my 20's and 30's. I hung around them all the time, so I am kind of an old soul, at least thats what the wife tells me. But I wouldnt change it for nothing.

Yea, no sh*t! I needed a drink after adding my two teenage daughters last month. Geez.

My wife and I decided to make our kids pay their own insurance to learn the cost of "life." Its on our policy, but our agent gives us the amount for each car. They get little jobs to cover the amounts due, but more importantly they learn that it cost money to live, and have gained an appreciation for what it takes to earn it. It was a good decision. And the look on their face when they hand over the money for insurance each month is priceless. One of my better parenting decisions. In a couple of instances I suspended that rule briefly. But those times were the exception.

An unexpected side effect of that has been that my kids are extremely hard workers, and have been promoted above their peers, even at a young age.

I did the same thing along with good grades. And like you, best decision I could've made as a parent.

Both daughters are in their 30s now and have a very good work ethic.

Kudos to you and the Mrs deemus. THAT is what parenting is about, both the lesson and the leniency when appropriate. :flag:

ETA: OK, kudos to those who raise their kids right. (That's nice and generic ;) )
