    • Republican Sen. John Cornyn of Texas has won a major endorsement from the National Rifle Association as he faces a tough primary challenge from Rep. Steve Stockman, a tea party conservative.

The backing from NRA's Political Victory Fund is a massive boost to Cornyn's campaign for a third term, and deals a crushing blow to Stockman, an outspoken gun-rights activist, The Dallas Morning News reports.

"John Cornyn is a consistent and passionate champion of our Second Amendment rights," said Chris Cox, chairman of NRA-PVF. "The choice is clear for law-abiding gun owners and sportsmen in the U.S. Senate Republican primary election in Texas, and that choice is John Cornyn."

Cornyn's campaign described the deputy GOP leader in the Senate as a lifelong hunter and outdoorsman, and touted his unwavering support for Texans' right to keep and bear arms.

"For many folks like myself, hunting and shooting sports are part of a rich and long Texas tradition of enjoying the outdoors," said Cornyn, who claims he's been instrumental in helping to safeguard the rights of people with concealed weapons permits.

The campaign says the senator introduced a bill allowing people with carry permits to cross state lines into other states with similar laws, and he opposed pro-gun control Justices Elena Kagan and Sonya Sotomayor's nominations to the Supreme Court.

The Dallas Morning News said that Cornyn's NRA endorsement is "a signal that some of the savviest minds in conservative politics are betting that Cornyn ... will survive the challenge."

Stockman is also a longtime gun advocate, and he even invited NRA board member Ted Nugent to President Barack Obama's State of the Union address to protest his plan to enforce more gun controls following the Newtown massacre.

Nugent revealed last week on Twitter that he is a supporter of both Cornyn and Stockman, and did not plan to endorse either candidate.

Stockman, who previously served in Congress from 1995-1997, once raffled off a Bushmaster AR-15 while pointing out it is "the No. 1 firearm on the gun banners' wish list."

And he's notorious for accusing the government of "executing" members of the Branch Davidian cult in the 1993 siege of their compound near Waco, Texas, to justify a ban on assault weapons.

According to USA Today, Cornyn has a massive fundraising treasure chest compared to Stockman, with $7 million in the bank versus $32,000 for his main rival in the March 4 primary.

But Stockman could be hoping to make a killing in the fundraising stakes with his "Official Obama Barf Bag," which he's selling for $10 on his website.

Calling himself a proud and principled tea party Republican, he says, "Dear liberty patriot, Obama's socialism makes me sick! And I have the barf bag to prove it! And I'm saying what no one else in Washington has the backbone to say. Just go here and chip in $10 to make your tea party friends jealous."

This is a significant change as Stockman was endorsed before!
I don't know much about Stockman but I can't justify the dirty, underhanded campaign he waged against Ted Cruz. Please help me understand why I should support Stockman in spite of my feelings about his shabby attacks on Cruz. Set me straight and I'll consider shifting my support.

    Thanks!

I posted for info only would not try to change your mind which I suspect is already made up, however for me I can never vote for Cornyn again, he simply is a big business, chamber of commerce guy not really concerned with working conservatives IMO. He only recently turned conservative once he seen he would have an opponent. We need a huge change in DC the RINO crowd must go.

No, my mind is not made up. My opinion is based solely on the shabby campaign against Cruz. If he as done a good job otherwise, I will support him. Unless his name appeared on a bill that harms our Second Amendment rights, my opinion is fluid. If he supports that type of legislation, it is a poison dipped arrow for me!

Folks settle down on this. I just got off the fone with the NRA and no I did not call some 800 number and speak with a talking head. I called a cell fone and spoke with someone I know in the top leadership.

I asked WHY Cronyn over Stockman. Well it was easy. As noted the NRA has supported Stockman in the past, but Stockman has shifted gears and is now running against Cronyn for the Senate. Fact is they support both candidates and have. But because both are now in the same race it was support one or the other as they cannot endorse both. They chose Cornyn as they have supported him in the Senate seat for some time. Had Stockman stayed in his Congressional he would have also been endorsed as the NRA has endorsed both in the past. Sure it was a tough call...

The only way the volte gets split is if the one who doesn't with the RepublicRAT primary chooses to make a run as an independent or Tea Party candidate.

It is if enough of us throw a hissy fit and stay home in the general if Cornyn wins the primary.

I admit I don't quite get the hate for Cornyn but heaven help us if we let Kirk Watson or one of the Castro brothers slip in.

Cornyn is a do-nothing, status quo republican. His "accomplishments" listed in that article are little more than pandering, and his refusal to support Cruz really shows his true colors. I don't know much about Stockman, but at least he isn't Cornyn... Is there anyone else running for the Senate seat worth looking into besides Stockman?

Cornyn spent a pile of money on advertising on the Houston talk radio stations recently that were big Cornyn haters. That seems to have silenced the stations, and I no longer hear any disparaging comments. Cornyn has the resources to shut up his detractors.
