Can't say I've ever had a problem with leading if they're sized/lubed correctly and not driven too fast.

As far as powder coating itself, don't know about diy.

I haven't heard of powder coating lead bullets, but I have cast and loaded thousands of lead bullets without problem simply by keeping velocities down and using a good bullet lube. You haven't mentioned the bullets' weights or which cartridge you will be loading them in but if they're simply for plinking then lower velocity shouldn't be an issue. Next, look at the base of the bullet to see if it is rebated for a gas check, if it is, use them.

You can use some ALOX on them and let them airy dry, preferably outside in a ventilated and dry area. That really helps cut back the leading problem and My family and I haven't experienced any accuracy or reliability issues with them. We do this particularly with .357 loads.

Also, you can make a great bullet lube yourself out of a mixture of 60% Bee's wax and 40% Vaseline. I used it for decades with no problem.

these wad cutters are 148 grain flat.
I ran a batch of them with 4.5 gr of Unique and leaded up my gun.

I see where I must have pushed them too fast, which is more than likely the cause of the leading.

that lead is such a booger to get out, I just didn't want to worry about that in the future

There are several manufacturers who make lead removers both for the barrel and forcing cone. The "Lewis Lead Remover" is but one. I'd post a link but TGT's goofy software doesn't allow me to cut and paste anything....it also ignores about every 10th keystroke.

I'd have to check the book, but that sounds like a full power load. IIRC, wadcutters use a reduced charge and are set almost entirely in the case.

the Lewis Lead Remover is on my short list for sure.

If you really don't want all the leading and smoke that lead bullets can produce.

    Get into making swaged bullets.

These are made from 147 gr. 9mm ball fmj.

yeah, I loaded them up in 38 special

    That's a fairly heavy charge for .38.
Drop it down to 4.0 and see how that goes. Should have a 900fps velocity, give or take.
Have you measured the diameter of the wadcutters?
