Hey everyone, im a 19 year old college student that believes in the second amendment, and already have a question for everyone. Ive done some research on the site and in some forums and from what i have seen alot of people are saying yes i can have a handgun in my pocession, i know i cant buy it but thats the beauty of having a mom or and older brothers that are more than willing to buy me the pistol. But before i go out and get one i want to make sure that i can have one cause i hear a different story from everyone. My real want for one is to keep it in my vehicle, i dont think my 1500 dollar ar 15 is a good gun to keep in my jeep nor is my .300 win mag, lever action 3030, or my remington 870.
So to cut to the chase may I, 19 years old, have a pistol in my vehilce?

Secondly may i have one in the house i will be living at while i am in school, its a rental house under my name.
Well thank you everyone for your time and reading please try and help me clear this up, i want to know for sure so please if your just guessing tell me so i dont land up arrested.
    Thanks,
    Shane

Do not have somebody else purchase it from a dealer, unless it's a gift. Having somebody else buy it for you constitutes a straw purchase.
Unless the law has changed, it's perfectly legal for you to own a handgun, but you're still prohibited by federal law from buying ammo for it!

I don't think I would carry it in your car. You might run into an officer that didn't get the memo. I don't know if car carry is legal for you or not but I wouldn't chance it. As for you residence go ahead hope you don't ever have to use it, but it is always a good idea to plan for the worse. Where you going to school?

i see no problem with a lever action for a truck gun if you can hide easily while running errands or what not... I have thought about getting a lever action or smaller carbine rifle for truck carry. Then use my pistol (once I have my CHL) to fight back to my truck if I can.

well i have a single shot crack open 20 gauge that would fit in there cause my lever action is kinda to nice to throw in my jeep. But all i know is those guns are long and will be hard to pull out in a hurry.

usually if you're in your vehicle it's best to drive if you can.... ie leave extra room at all stops for escape route and plan ahead. but if you are stuck in your vehicle it might be a bit hard to do, but no matter what you decide, practice, practice, practice.... even a handgun can be a b1@tch to get out in a hurry

on a side note I've heard of people that were legally carrying (and used their weapon justifably) take years to get it back and some that did not

Under the age of 18 you can only posses a handgun in the state of Texas if: you are in the military and have attained a CHL or if you are armed security or LE and our on the job. You can also posses one if you are on you way to or from the range.

Actually, the traveller law might cover you - but the legal fight could be VERY expensive. The bottom line, like it or not, is that LEO's that find ANY kind of firearm in the hands of someone under age 25 are going to be very suspicious - and tend to think that you're up to no good. Fair? No - but we're talking realities here.
I think you'd be well served to pay a local attorney for a consultation so that you better understand the potential ramifications of carrying, and exactly what your rights are. He'll also be able to advise you on just what to do/say in the event that you're stopped by a LEO. Bear in mind that a LOT will depend on the specifics of the stop - if, say, someone with you is carrying ANY kind of drugs, you're likely to be Dead Meat. Or if you've partaken of ANY amount of alcohol.
It's a sad acknowledgement of the times, I know - as a kid, I always had a gun with me simply because we had livestock at various locations, and I'd often go to one or more of them before and/or after school. Got stopped several times with comment while having a gun or two in the truck. Nowadays, I'm sure the situation would be totally different.
So, best advice is to seek COMPETENT and PROFESSIONAL advice!!

OK, enough of the disinformation already. I just went through all of Chapter 46 of the Texas Penal Code. Nothing in there says you cannot own or possess a handgun if you are under 21. Federal law deals with the purchase or transfer of handguns and handgun ammunition.
