I've been thinking about how people are moving to Texas from failed states (California, Illinois) and bringing that failed state socialist mentality with them.

Then I got thinking about the legality of states controlling their own borders more.

This is exactly why the Dems are dumping so much time, money, and effort here. They see a glimpse of hope as our state becomes ever more populated with their constituents.

Didn't California do this during the Depression?

You had to show you had X number of $ before they let you in?

Not per se, but they do have the right to tax. I'm sure it would end up at the SC, but what if the State imposed a $1500.00 tax on DL license processing for converting out of state DL's, a $2500.00 tax for registering a vehicle from out of state, etc. etc.
The Feds have no control over State taxing authority..... and if the State wants to waive the fee for some, well isn't that what Bama is doing with ACA?

I think that battle has been fought and lost in several of the Texas/Mexico adjoining states for several years now.

I'll tell you one of the main reasons I moved here is because I see dark times ahead for this country and Texas is one of a small number of states that can go it alone. I can see how the US could break up and I want to be with like minded individuals to rebuild.

Unfortunately, the concept of E Pluribus Unum (from many, one) has in practice become E Plurimus Uum ( from most, one). The Liberals' in general and Obama in particular's promoting of diversity and multi-culturalism have eroded the idea of "from many, one" to the point where Americans have become factious and fractious. Texans have, more than any other state's citizens, avoided that pitfall and still identify as Texans or Tejanos despite their background or skin color so why not control immigration to Texas through any of several possible methods?

Florida tried that in the early 90's. They charged me $500+ to register my out of state vehicle. A couple of years later I received a check for most of it because it was overturned in some court somewhere and they where require to pay me back minus $30 or $40 registration fee.

Change State Election Law. Do not let Republicans vote in Democrat Primaries, and Democrats vote in Republican Primaries, plus the same for third parties.

Publish a list of all who voted in each primary election.

    That would uncover fraud.

Fair and free elections, with personal accountability.

According to the 10th Amendment, yes they do. But we threw out the Constitution a long time ago.

    Im hoping for a theocracy.

    Have your prayer rug already?

That is what you meant, right?

The lack of sarcasm tags around here can be confusing.

If we get a theocracy, I nominate Pastafarianism for the official religion. In that case, if you practice an unapproved religion the worst the Flying Spaghetti Monster can do is flog you with a wet noodle.

ETA - To reply to the original question by the OP - no. Countries control borders; states do not.
